Which kind of noise? Water splashing or mechanical noise? If it is splashing noise, raising the water level is about all you can do. If it is mechanical noise, check the impellar and make sure there isn't a snail shell or anything in it. Which bio-wheel filter do you have, emperor or penguin? In my experience the emperor is the louder of the two.

It doesn't always look great, but you could attach a sponge to the output that reaches to the surface of the water to help on the water noise.

How long has your biowheel been running? IME it takes about a month or so for the wheel to become saturated with water-bacteria-etc and to stop make the loud splashing noise. Once a biowheel is broke in, you should only be able to here the water as you would from a regular HOB filter.

you could always unplug it. not that that's conducive to life or anything. :sim:

I went through various levels of noise with 3 different Bio-Wheels before I just gave up and bought an Aquaclear. If noise bothers you, that's really the only solution.

with biowheels, it takes a while for them to break in, and it can be a little noisy during the break in priod.

if it is a water noise problem, then yes, filling up the tank more will help.

I must be weird..but I have experienced absolutely no noise at all with my biowheel. The only time it splashes is when I'm late on a water change and the water level's dropped off.

If it is new, hold the BIO-Wheel by the end caps and twist it lightly. Not enough to cause it to come off the end caps, but enough to cause water to hit one side of the wheel before the other. Marineland suggests this to reduce noise.

I am actually surprised how quiet my pengiun dual bio wheel unit is... as long as I keep up the water level and keep it clean its virtually silent.

How long has it been running? It should be quieter after a couple of days.

Got 4 tanks all with double Penguins on them (4X 350's, 3X 200 and a 1550) and I do get a bubbling brook sound. Don't really hear it unless I listen for it.

It's background noise; heck, people spend mega bucks for white noise surf sounds to help them relax! I got the sounds as a side benefit plus the bonus of fishies to watch!

I vaguely remember reading a post where someone suggested installing something that would deflect the splashing water. I suppose this could be anything- most likely a flat surface as close as possible to the output of water. I have seen clear plastic soap dishes/holders at Target that have suction cups. Maybe you could stick one of these to the tank wall directly under the biowheel's waterfall.

I just put a brand-new Penguin 350 on my sister's tank and found it to be quiet enough.

It will quiet down after the break in period. Raising the water level will also help. If it is a mecanical noise may I suggesst inspecting the impeller. It can make a terrible noise if it is not operating correctly.
