Stocking & Planting for a 70 gallon?

Hi Everyone : )

I haven't posted here for a long time but I have recently blacked out my 70 gallon tank (which previously was a gigantic pile of BGA). At the moment it is very lowly stocked with only 5 phantom tetras and 4 freshwater shrimp, no doubt the reason for the BGA outbreak.

So here I am ready for a clean start!

I am planning to have a moderately planted tank. ATM there is only some Vals and a large amazon sword. I am looking to add quite a few crypts as I have had success with them in this tank before. Also some stem plants just for some added height. (The tank is med->low lighting @ 90watts)

My substrate is fine sand.

Anyway, onto my real question:

My ideas regarding what fish to buy:

A school of surface dwellers such as: Congo Tetras, giant Danios, Scissor-Tail Rasaboras (are they surface dwellers? I am not sure). Any other ideas welcome.

For middle level possibly some Angelsfish (typical!) and a school of Black Widows or something similar (ie. large-ish tetras). I dont know if I want the Angels as they can become agressive but they seem to be an easy choice for "centrepiece" fish, any other suggestions? Discus are too expensive LOL. The tank is quite tall @ 64cm high, hence the Angels suggestion.

For bottom dwellers I was thinking of either Kuhlies or some sort of Corys, although I am unsure about the Corys I have had them before and they always ate my Ram eggs (I might try Rams again, too?). The dimensions of the base of the tank are 120cm x 40cm.

Anyway that's the end of my l..o..n..g.. post.
Any comments or Ideas?

TIA!
Michael

xongos are mid-water dwellers, and you could have a school of 8 in your tank along with an angel for the centerpeice and top dweller. you should also add three more phantoms to your current school.

for the bottom of the tank, a group of 6 corydoras will look cool.

As an alternative to the angels you could try rainbows, and the corys or kuhlis will love the fine sand.

Yeah so I am thinking of going with the corys.... I just have this fear of NEVER seeing the Kuhlies lol. I'll probably end up getting the angels too, it's been a while since I have had some.

Any ideas on some suitable top dwellers?

Thanks : )

hatchets would be cool.

a school of 18 phantoms, a group of 12 corydoras and a school of 8 hatchets with a single angel as the centerpeice would look great as a biotope

Yeah, that would look good...The Cories would just LOVE the sand!! They bury themselves in it! LOL! ADORABLE!;)

Silver hatchets or even the marble hatchets if you can find them would look really nice with that set up. However, if you do decide to get the hatchets, make sure that you have a tight fitting lid since they seem to have a passion for jumping right out of the tank for a little bit of carpet surfing.

Hehe. Yeah I know. Mine is one of those enclosed tank & filter (like and eclipse) thing so it should be fine : ). Going to the fish store today!

Thanks everyone!
