View Full Version : Tankmates
i am moving my 3 firebellies to a 30x12x18" high tank with a 12x8x8" water portion. I would like to eventually keep some lizards in there as well. i have looked at six-lined grass lizards and neon blue tree lizards, as well as day geckos and small agamas. If anyone has any other ideas I would be most grateful.
Thanks,
momar

I wouldnt put these toads in with other species, as they're known to secrete toxic fluids from glands behind their head.
the only other animal you can put in there along with the firebelly toad, is a firebelly newt.
I have read various accounts of people successfully keeping them with anoles and day geckos, notably Philippe de Vosjoli, who is something of an amphibian and reptile expert. Also, firebelly newts produce a different toxin to firebelly toads, so they would both be of potential risk. I figured the 12x8x8 water portion would provide enough dilusion of any secreted poison, and none of the reptiles which can be kept in the size of tank are large enough to try to eat firebellies. Also, I have kept my firebelly newt for about 9 months with white clouds and now sterba cories and a floating frog with no problems from poisoning.
Although of course I appreciate the concern! :)
