By MIKE SCHNEIDER, Associated Press Writer

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - An astronaut charged with attempting to kidnap a romantic rival in a love triangle with another astronaut was ordered released on bail Tuesday under the condition that she not contact the alleged victim.

The judge told Lisa Marie Nowak, 43, she could be released on $15,500 bond, then asked if she understood the conditions. She responded, "yes."

Nowak, a married mother of three, stood in a jail uniform, usually facing down as the hearing was under way.

She faces charges including attempted kidnapping, attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery.

Police said she drove 900 miles, donned a disguise and was armed with a BB gun and pepper spray when she confronted a woman she believed was a competitor for the affections of Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein, a fellow astronaut.

Nowak and Oefelein, 41, were both first-time fliers during separate shuttle missions last year. They trained together but never flew together.

Isn't this insane?!? Fox news titled the story Astro-Nut. LMAO! I think they pegged that right. What on earth (or beyond) was she thinking? Hubby and I got a good laugh about it. I guess we know what 0 gravity does to a person now. *snort*

Gotta wonder what her Husband and 3 kids are going though right now.

gah!! how about that because she was driving from Texas to Florida, she wore an adult diaper so she wouldn't have to stop along the way to use the rest room.

The diaper thing just blew me away. That's true insanity there. I also heard that she was friends with and had trained with 4 of the people that died in that shuttle a few years ago and it messed her up.

I just can't understand how you can take, IMO, the ultimate career and flush it like that. And over a guy no less. lol

She's a Captain in the USN? Bad news for her; the court martial will not go well. I just don't understand why people throw this stuff away.

It takes two to tango. That guy may be recently divorced, but he's got two kids and has to think about being a positive example. Going after two married women? I can see two guys going over there and kicking his dumb stupid carcass into the next zip code.

The other woman in this mess is also military, and married. Another moron.

What a trio of fools. Good thing these dingheads weren't all on the same crew; Space Shuttles are expensive. Doing stupid stuff that can subject one to court martial is idiocy. Doing it from a position of public trust is idiocy at its finest.

Oh, you have to love this genius: Saying he was surprised by the case, NASA spokesman John Ira Petty at Johnson Space Center in Houston said he was concerned about the people involved and their families. But, he added, "We try not to concern ourselves with our employees' personal lives."

Really? So, if your astronauts are wearing diapers, assaulting people, cheating on their spouses, that's okay, because it's just on their personal time? I guess if they start smuggling drugs cross border, it's okay as long as they're not on the NASA clock, right? Hmmm, how much was that Shuttle, again? Ira (if that really is your middle name), you didn't pay for it, we taxpayers did. Typical disconnected NASA bureaucrat.

They'd all make great politicians. Write them in on the next senate ballot.
