One more quick question. What do others do when they lose power for extended periods of time(days)?? Especially those that have large aquariums with a lot of money invested??

I don't know what you could do for days. I have a UPS for my aquarium (battery backup) but it would only provide maybe a couple hours of power.

You'd be surprised what a UPS can power and for how long - depending on what is attached to it, provided the UPS is one of the large ones. Mine is a 1500va. A UPS will take care of things during a power outage when you aren't home to know about it.

I have a 200 watt inverter that I can hook up to a car battery or even a lawn tractor battery, for longer run time.

Generator is on the list of things I need.

cheap solution if you can't afford UPS or generator:

Buy a battery powered air pump, you can buy them at any fish store. It will at least keep the tank oxygenated during the outage and makes a huge difference. If it's cold throw a blanket over the tank, if it's hot put ice cubes in. Try to feed as little as possible until power comes back on, you don't want to be adding waste to the tank with no filter running.

That should get you by in an outage .

I used a UPS during a recent power outage, and it kept my tank heaters running for upwards of 8 hours.

Through my experiences with upses in the comp. sever rms, they are great to have and come in a wide aray of sizes to suit diff. needs and times. If you have one allways check it like once a week to see if the batteries are good and use the batteries for short periods to discharge power and then let that battery charge, just like a car, once in a while it needs to drive if you want it to run. Plus you can see if the batteries charge fine so you have insurance that it works when it counts.

for long periods of time a small 5000w generater can run my 3 tanks 4 lights for me and a 13in tv the refrig. and dvd player.
