Hi all, new here, with my first post. I've just bought a new large aquarium that I'm very excited about setting up. I've had others in the past, but much smaller. I'm sure you've been asked before about what types of fish you would put in a new tank, so I'll ask too!!! Just want to get some opinions and ideas. I've been leaning towards having a few cichlids mixed with other dither fish. I'm not really keen on having an aggressive tank, and would like to have some sharks, silver dollars, rainbows, gouramis and even barbs. No I don't want (neccessarily) huge fish, just colourful and interesting. One cichlid I think I'd like is a group of electric yellows. Being I have very little experience with cichlids, that they are brightly coloured and on the less aggressive side, I think I'd really enjoy them. Ideally would like to have another type of ciclid ( or more) that would not only get along with the electric yellows, but with the other fish I mentioned. OR any other totally different ideas.
Thanks all.

welcome fellow Canadian to AC! You can read through some of the posts here and get some ideas, look at the "species profile" select cichlids and you can read up on the different species. This was very helpful for me.

Good luck!

I have a 180G of African cichilds, all milder ones. :)

- Electric yellow
- Saulosi
- Socolofi blue & albino
- super red mepress
- Blue dolphin
- Peacoks
- Rusties
- Electric Blue

This completes the color spectrum. Africanners are as colorful as salt water.

Cheers,

Robert

i would do a pair of severums and some dwarf cichlids

what are the dimensions? depending on those, you may be able to get an arowana(what id do). Would you be interested in having sa cichlids? theyr generally less aggressive then africans and imo better looking and have more personality. If it were my tank, id get(and again this depends on the dimensions) an aro(black would be best), a few somewhat peaceful sa cichlids(oscars are great) and some plecs and cats.

Hi there...the dimensions are 72" long, 18" wide and 30" high. Thnx all for the suggestions..I still have about a month before its all set up and cycled. Lots of ideas about different fish "floating" around. I heard not to mix africans with SA, is that a unbroken rule or strong guidelines. re: yellow labs with severums???
Thnx

Throw in a couple of firemouths with some jack dempsys and severums. Them toss in some barbs, gouramis or whatever. Dont mix africans and americans! Thy require different water parameters, food, and dont always get along.

Rams, other apistos, angels and schools of your favorites.

nvm aro wont work with those dimensions, but you could still have the sa cichlids.
