I haven't used my Marineland Magnum for a couple years now because the impeller was busted. I replaced the impeller the other day and hooked it back up again.

Problem is when I turn it on, it doesn't move any water. It also leaks from the lid, especially when I tip it.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Try need gasket for lid with a small coating of vaseline.

vaseline is petroleum based, i thought that was a no-no on aquarium equipment.. wouldnt silicone-based lubrication do better?

Yes you are right. But on my Mag 350s, the lid O-ring is to the exterior of any direct contact with the water and just acts as a seal between the mating parts.

Are you sure that orange D-ring gasket is properly in place?

If it's leaking, it won't move water. No filter that depends on partial case vacuum will work with a leak like that.

The HOT Magnum 250 is designed to seal, even when the D-shaped o-ring has shrunk a little due to age. That clamping mechanism on top of the lid generates quite a bit of useful force. Make sure the ring is properly seated, and if still no dice, get a fresh one.

The D-ring is in there properly and appears to be in good condition.

I will buy another D-ring.

If that doesn't work, I guess I'm SOL.

Lordy, with a good sealing o-ring, I'd look for cracks or disruptions in the sealing surface. I just can't comprehend one of these things noticeably leaking.

I inspected everything and nothing's broken.

I lubed up the D-ring in peanut oil and it didn't work.

When I tipped it over the skin more water tricked out.
