I have never had any live plants in my 55 gallon tank and thought i might begin the adventure. What are some very easy to care for plants that will survive for a newbie? Also i have seen this CO 2 thing and do all plants need that are is this just for tanks with a lot of plants.

Java fern, java moss, and elodea (anacharis) are all low-light hardy plants. You wouldn't need Co2 for any of them.

I've found that sagittarius is extremely hardy. (coming from someone who managed to kill the previously mentioned plants) My tanks are all low tech, and it survived and reproduced into a large cluster (by runner). It's very pretty and cheap, too.

Good luck!

low tech plants that have worked for me.

java fern, anubias, java moss, crytocoryne, water sprite. wisteria

elodea densa(aka anacharis, aka brazillian water weed) is supposed to be easy but..be aware it is illegal to transport it to many states as it is considered invasive.
with egeria, elodea (there are some that are not on the list) I find they actualy do best in high light with CO2..I have some egeria grwoing in a low tech plant..it tends to get leggy..in my high light with injected CO2 it grows dense and is very healthy)
