I already have a 30G running on a fluval 205 and either a reina xp2 or eheim 2213 in a few days. Most likely, because of the size of the tank im going for the smaller lake malawi cichlids. Im most likely to get a male and female pair of yellow labs because i like them alot and it will be intresting if they breed. I might also get a texas red cichlid and then see how it goes on from there.

you're on the road to disaster. while your water may be fine for African Cichlids, your tank is NOT.
1. it's too small for Lake Malawi cichlids (Labidochromis caeruleus) yellow labs
2. African cichlids from Lake Malawi are NOT PAIR FORMERS so getting two of them is a bad idea. these are polygamous cichlids which means they must be kept in a sexual ratio of 1 Male + 3-4 Females. if you keep a "pair" or fewer than at least 3 females, the male will kill ALL the females in an effort to spawn with them.
3. it's MUCH too small for a texas cichlid ... it will KILL all other fish in a tank that small.
4. Texas cichlids and African cichlids don't belong in the same tank. their water chemistry and dietary requirements are completely different.
please do some research before making a move that will result in dead fish and an unsuccessful entry into the world of cichlids.

yes, Tanganyikan cichlids will do well in thirty gallons .. but please do some research on which species to get .. not ALL of them are appropriate for you. Tropheus for example.

lamprologus species are small enough for 30 gallons as are shell dwellers.
