View Full Version : How does one go about quarantining snails?
I was looking into adding an apple snail or two into my 10g tank. Once I buy them from the store, how would I go about quarantining them to make sure they are free of disease? Is it merely if they survive the 2-week quarantine period they are safe to add to the tank, or should I look for specific things?

QT them the same way you would a regular fish.
not sure if there is anything you should look for though. if anything does happen, it will probably in those two weeks.

Um. Maybe to be double sure you could get an old clean toothbrush and brush the shell, just incase there are any eggs attached?
I know on my Mystery snail, little snails like to climb all over his back and eat the algae on the shell.

Are you sure you would want to put an apple snail in such a small tank, they get huge, roughly the size of a stoftball. and they move everything around, and if you have non agressive fish, or even just small fish, that tend to sleep towards the bottom, the apple snail will crawl on them , and pretty much just suck them to death.
Oh...a lot of research I did seems to say that they only get the size of a ping-pong ball. If they get teh size of a softball, maybe I'll pass...

well... I have apple snails... and they're fairly big.

this site gives you the size, and specifically states in there that an apple snail is one of the most biggest snails there is.
but they are gorgeous to look at, especially the blue mystery snails

I love my Canas and my Brigs! Snails carry no disease that can be passed on to fish, however there can be water carried in their shell that could have parasites or some other nasty.

apple snails are good , they take awhile to get big, and idk how good your LFS is, but here once my apple snails get to be too big, they let me bring them back and switch it for a smaller one, so switching them up all the time could be helpful if you want an apple snail.
