I've noticed that during the day when I shut the bubbler off the fish seem to breath faster. Is this something that will be deadly or at some point when the plants start really growing will they be producing enough o2 to sustain the fish. At this point if I inject co2 it is too much for them to handle and they gasp at the surface. When that happens I have to turn the bubbler on which then wastes they co2. Should I wait until the plants start growing more/faster?

What temperature do you have the tank at? Warmer water holds less oxygen, you could try lowering the temperature a few degrees to see if you notice a difference.
You say the tank is heavily inhabited, you may simply have too much fish stock for the available oxygen and might consider moving some of the fish out.
Being heavily stocked has downsides, have you considered what will happen if the power fails?

the temp is 85 but I have discus so it kind of needs to be warm. and I can't seem to get the temp down anyway. It must be real warm in my house.
as far as my tank being heavily inhabited I have 27-28 small tetras (3 different kinds) 2 discus(3 inch) and 3 clown loaches. Do you think if I can get the temp down the discus will be ok? and I really do have a lot of plants, when they start filling in they should put off enough o2, I think.

Are you sure your thermometer is correct?

What plants do you have? Some of those look nonaquatic. Especially that lucky bamboo looking one and the one next to it that could possibly be mondo grass.

the thermometer is the glass kind and I've checked it running hot and cold water over it. Other than the bamboo all the plants are aquatic. And some will argue that bamboo is aquatic. It sure has grow a lot.
Amazon swords
Isoetes
baby tears
dwarf hair grass
Bocapa
Penny wart
and I'm not sure what the tall grass one are. They are fully rooted and came out of a tank

Checking it by running hot and cold water over it does nothing more than prove it moves.....unless you know the temperature of the water you are running over it. It's quite common for these inexpensive thermometers to go bad.
On another forum a member trusted the thermometer and no common sense. He thought his heater was broken. Cranked it all the way up. Added another heater. Tank was almost 90° but he thought it was 60° based on the thermometer. A simply touching the glass would have told most people the tank was not 60°.

The clowns need to be rehomed. As they grow they will begin to uproot your plants and then outgrow your tank. They will also way out compete the discus for food. Discus are not aggressive eaters, more like grazers, and do best fed a few times a day in smaller amounts. Clowns will eat anything they can find 24/7.
You dont need the temp at 85, in fact it may not be great for the plants over the longer term. 82 should be sufficient.
