My barred midas seems to shy away from the light when it is on. Is this common? i have a single 30 watt bulb set on a timer. The problem is that he wont eat when the light is on.

What can I do?

if your tank is big enough, you could add some dither fish to the tank to help him feel more secure.

yeah, he is still a juvenile. what kind of fish would you recommend? i plan on upgrading to a 75 or 90 in about 6 months when he gets a little bit bigger. he is about 4 inches in a 30 gallon tank.

wait until you upgrade to the 90 to get dithers.

giant danios are the best dithers for big cichlids IMO

another thing you can do is put some floating plants to shade the area a bit. Many people don't consider the fact that most cichlids stay in shady areas or murky water when bright light is out. I have found my Dempsey is much more of a medium to top swimmer sense I put some tall shady type fake plants in.
