Hi I'm new here and this is my first post. First, thank you to you kind people because you give such great information that is difficult to learn for some people like me otherwise. Anyway I have a 55 gallon aquariam that is home to four what I believe to be convict cichlids. One I'm very unsure about (see pic) but I did buy him from the same tank that the convicts were in. One I believe is female because she has an orange belly. Males can't have those too can they? One is slightly smaller than the female and has greyer stripes. One is larger than the female, but not by much and has darker stripes. And the other like I said I'm not very sure about... I set this tank up about 3 weeks ago, filled it, gravel (med size 1/8" or so i guess) added correct amount per instructions of novaqua and amquel, and bacterial supplement, and aquariam salt, hooked up the filter (aqua tech 30-60) submersible heater around 80 degrees, and let it sit for a 3 or 4 days before adding fish. I also added some leafy plastic plants on one side, two bottomless clay pots on either side at 45 degree angles towards the back and added a hollow log cave like decoration thing in the middle. I do gravel vacuuming with water change. I kinda need to know if I'm doing it right. I have a five gallon bucket that sits with aged tap water and an empty five gallon bucket that i siphon out the debris and water from the gravel into. Once the bucket is filled, I let it sit until the waste settles at the bottom. Then return the water minus the waste to the aquariam. Four times I do this, before adding the 5 gallon bucket of fresh water. Is this correct or should I do something differently? Also for this size aquariam should I have another filter or just the one?(it's positioned on the back left side corner of the aquariam ,aqua tech 30-60). I have so many questions, im very sorry. The type of gravel I have is that ok for convicts or should it be something else or is it to late to change it anyway because of the good bacteria that's building up in it i guess?
Well they seem healthy and active and like to chase each other around alot and are very interesting to watch. I feed them freeze dried bloodworms, Hikari brand cichlid gold floating medium size pellets, sun dried baby brine shrimp and some flake stuff. Anyway if nothing else could you all help me identify and sex these two in the pictures. The Odd one I name pingpong cause he gets bounced around alot between the others. The other is the largest I have and I named him or her stinkfist just cause of attitude i guess.
Anyway thanks in advance for all your help!!!
