I've had these guys about 4 months now. The size ratio between them has remained the same although they've grown much quicker than my Firemouths.

The bigger one stays dark most of the time, but does flash his/her colours a lot. The smaller one seems a bit broader across the forehead when we glare each other out, which makes me think it's a male.

to sex or not to sex?

You did not say how old these fish are, only that you had them aprox. 4 mths.
Well here goes, first jacks take awhile to show finnage (longer in the male dorsal/anal) and the females body should be a bit taller when viewed from the side and a bit wider when viewed from on top.
About 9 mths. is when these fish really shine, feed them a well varied diet of blood worms chopped earth worms, frozen veggies(Emerald treat is great) frozen krill and some pellets either floating or sinking, you will have to experiment a little, get them used to you being around and you will have them eating out of your hand!

Russ, females have spots all the way down the gill plate. The males' gill plates are blank. If you search for some pictures here on the site you'll be able to find some good examples to help you sex your JDs. That part of the fish isn't clear in your pictures, which is probably why you haven't gotten a response.

You have some nice looking fish, and plants. :)

I have my suspician that they are both males but I will take a picture of my female and post it and you can decide by looking at that what yours are. The darker on could be a female.

:look: Cheers guys. I've put up a couple of pics that are more clear for you. I don't know how old the fish were when I bought them, but they were 2-3" long. I can guarantee that their diet has been a lot better in my tank than in the LFS before, with all your suggested foods and more being given twice a day, meaning their growth rate has been quite rapid, but I expect them to be around the 9 - 12 month mark.

Thanks for the compliments on the plants. Back in the day when aquatics was my life, I could never get the **** things to grow. Now, with Wisteria and Cabomba I have to trim it back regularly, plus the planted bogwood has been growing beyond my wildest dreams, turning from what looked like a dead Autumnal leaf into a vigoros (US spelling for you guys!) grower.

Once again, many thanks

I am 95% sure they are both males. sorry I have not put my pic up yet. I brought my camera to work thinking the card reader was the same as mine but it wasn't, so I am going to have to wait till I get home. but nice pictures

D'oh, I thought as much. Cheers for your help:thm:

One of them has to go before they start causing problems. It's gonna be hard coming up with a fish that I like to replace him, maybe I'll go for a single Salvini

Look like males to me...

As for the color; the Alpha fish is normally darker, the Beta is lighter to show the other that he's the boss. Normally the bigger is the Alpha...
