Hellooooo all!

I would love to add a refugium to my 29 gallon tank. My plan is via a 5 gallon under the tank (in the stand) i cant see paying almost 200 for one made by a company... but ive run into a road block.. the fuge is under my tank so whats the best method to get water from the tank to the fuge and vise versa. Im thinking along the lines of maxi jet power heads and some pvc. Also in the fuge do i have to add dividers. (my skimmer is HOB the heater is inside as are the power heads, im just looking to the fuge for food and extra filtration)

Thanks a million :)

It would probably be wiser and more cost effective for you to do a search on HOB refugiums. They are not 5 gal but you don't have to buy an overflow or drill your tank.

you don't want to use powerheads to get the water to the fuge. You won't be able to match the feed and return flow rate and it'll either flood or run dry. You need an overflow oof some sorts like mentioned above. Do some googlin' on DIY overflows.

could someone please explain how a overflow and a sump work please. ive looked everywhere and just become more confused, and i have a background
in mechanical engineering! i understand a sump is a place to but all heaters filtration ect. what i dont get is the process of water coming from the tank and then back to it, how to not get the tank to overflow and siphon, i mean the overflow in simplest terms looks like two pipes, one water goes down one comes up, how do u get the amounts equal so no flooding and in the sump how do u know where to put all the baffles...
so confused
thanks.

WOW thank you so much... the light bulb turned on

i would really like to build a sump for my tank. my question is its only a 29 gallon and im working with limited funds.. do you think it would still be a good idea?

thanks again :)

Yep 8x10 peices of glass at HD!! Had to get a glass cutter and some cutting oil as they where about 16th of an inch too big. so either have the glass shop do it or watch your fingers and buy 1 or two extra. it rran about $15 for glass silicon and oil, I already had the cutter.
