Shy Royal Gramma

I brought a royal gramma back from the store last week and put him into quarantine. He seems fine so far, he easts a little, and swims around the tank when I'm watching him across the room.

The problem is that whenever I come close to the tank, he runs and hides inside a fake rock I keep in the QT tank for decoration and hiding. Will he ever stop running away from me?

This is a saltwater fish that tends to hid whenever he is feels threatened. You probably don't have a lot of rock in your QT tank. I think once the quarentine time is finished and he goes into an established tank you will slowly start to see him appear more. Don't try to rush it an make sure he has lots of hiding places.
 
It took my royal gramma close to 3 weeks before he would stay out of the rocks with me near the aquarium. I've found that they tend to be REALLY shy and get easily threatened. Just give it some time and he'll be fine.

Usually when I bring home any fish from the LFS they tend to hide when I come near the QT (especially the tangs I've had).

My buddy's royal gramma was also 'missing' for about 3-4 weeks and he thought his lobster ate it. It turned out that it was just hiding in the rocks all the time. :D
 
I think you all hit the nail on the head. Mine acts the same way and he has been in my tank for 6 years. He does have plenty of rock to hide and sometimes only comes out during feeding time. The best tho is when something invades his space and he opens his mouth really wide to scare it off. Really funny when my flame hawk sits next to him and the gramma has his mouth wide open about 2 mm away from the hawk and the hawk just looks at him with his googly eyes. :D
