Water Quality

Just starting out: I've been buying water for the saltwater aquarium at Walmart and it has become expensive. I really can't afford to buy an RO/DI at this time. I wonder if using a brita water filter might work for the time being. The local water quality report is as follows:

Barium = ND (not detected)
Copper = .34
Fluriode = ND
Lead = ND
TTHM = ND
Nitrates = .083

The Brita filters say it will filter out copper. What do you all think?
Thanks

Brita filters don't remove nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) from the water. There website makes no claims at all regarding nutrient removal. They claim to remove chlorine, but does your water have chloramine or chlorine in it? There's no statement by Brita that says their filters remove chloramine. Metals are really only 1/2 of the potential problem with tap water. Without removing nutrients, it would really be doing nothing to prevent nuissance algal growth.

That said, there's people that run their tanks using Brita filters. My guess would be that they already have good water quality coming straight from the tap (in terms of nutrients), they choose not to mention the problems they've encountered with nuissance algae, or they spend more money treating their water after the fact (nitrate and phosphate removal media).
