I remember reading someone mentioning something about using flourish excel to combat algae. Does anyone know what this method is and how to use it?

It is usually a double dose of excel that will kill of algae. The reason being that the main ingredient of excel is a carbon source that is used as a sterilizing agent. In low doses it is fine. Algae will suck it up fastest in a tank, so if there is lots of it the algae will suck it up and kill itself. (Something like that). I would start with a normal dose first and then a double dose the next day. Watch the fish to see if there are any adverse effects.

The bottle says for first dose use 1 cap full for 10g and then 1 cap full per 50g everyday. Does the double dose refer to the cap full per 10g or 50g? There is none in the water yet.

Any body know how to treat algae using flourish excel? or any better Ideas. Yesterday I cut off most of the effected leaves and removed some manually. Today I got some algae eaters. Shrimp, SAE's, and otto cats. as well as a hillstream loach. and I put phosphate remover in my filter. What else can I do?

I would just continue normal doses of excel for now, sicne you already manually removed most of the algae.

Did you actually have phosphates tested for in your tank?

In my time with excel and algae I have noticed that even when used in normal doses, existing algae is greatly diminished or sometimes even eradicated the next day.
