Ok, I'm partially responsible for a red devil/midas ciclid cross at work, we lovingly call Rocky. Anyway, Rocky is alone in his tank, I checked his water parameters today:

ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrates: just over 20.
Changed his water anyway, because it had been three weeks.

Anyway, Rocky has had ich problems in the past, but we licked 'em thanks to the help on this board, and getting him a bigger tank.

Now, he as these little clear bubble looking things in a line on his jaw line on one side, and on the back of one pectoral fin. He seems fine, but the "hump" on his head is markedly smaller...which happens when he's stressed we noticed. They are small little bubbles, smaller than a pencil eraser, probably about 10 in all on his face and fin. Any word on what this stuff might be?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your mystery disease. I have had discus that developed "bubbles" that turned out to be Hexamita. If this is the case, it may have been introduced through feeder fish. I'm just guessing, of course.

How much water did you change?

He only gets Ciclid pellets, no feeder fish.

We changed 15 gallons. His water params are good today.

He is acting and eating normally.

there is a lot of discussion around hexamita-HITA/HHLE
(looks like pimples)
in essence the two schools of thought are diet and flagellated protazoan.(depending on what you read)

treatment can be extra clean water conditions, adding anti-fungal meds and/or adding metronidazole.

diet would mean checking the needs of the red devil/midas X to make sure the diet is being supplemented correctly.
