hi everyone, its been about 10yrs since i last had cichlids so i need some refresher courses! i've got a 40gal cube tank with a 20gal sump i've turned back into a wet/dry filter. tank has squid wave device for current running 2 3/4" loc-line returns, replaced the halides with 2x55w pc bulbs. right now i've got some bricks with holes in the tank and am going to bring home some slate rubble from a job i'm doing. will be building a network of caves up the back wall.

my question is i don't want to go get the misc. cichlids from pet store and over load it with fish. i was think maybe 4-5 fish? wanted to try a pair but also don't want to spend 30 bucks a fish. if i drive 3hrs over to Portland there is a nice place called The Wet Spot/cichlid exchange. the guy gets in very rare and new species all the time. any suggestions for some pairs of colorful cichlids would be appreciated. thanks

I won't suggest specific species except to suggest that 4-5 medium sized ones would probably work well as would a slightly higher number of smaller ones (if you end up w/ a breeding pair, a few more if you avoid that). Remember, a breeding pair will demand a lot more tank space and be more aggressive about it than individuals will be.

I'd call your supplier, see what he's got then read up before making the drive over there.

40 gallon cube doesnt give cichlids a whole lot of room to get away from fish that may be meaner. You could go with an african setup. Maybe some convcicts. How big of fish do you want? Most cichlids get too big for a 40, but there are plenty that stay smaller, like Kribensis, keyholes, apisto's...ect.

the tank is 24x24x24 so not a ton of room but maybe i will go with 4-5 fish of same or similiar species and see if any will pair up. i guess i want to stay with Africans as there what i used to have. been so many years i can't remember names of fish but remember some colbalt blues and peacock's that were nice looking.
