I need advice on stocking a tank. I haven't bought a tank yet because I'm not sure what I want to put in it, so haven't decided on a size.
I would like to get about 4 or 5 African cichlids, a gold nugget pleco, a pictus cat and 3 tinfoil barbs. Would they be compatible with each other? I also like the blue crayfish, but wouldn't that eat my pleco? He would have to be a lone bottom dweller?
Also would I use gravel or crushed coral for the floor?
Thanks for any ideas.

The fish you've chosen have different water requirements. African cichlids (I assume you're meaning rift lake types, which are the species most commonly available) need hard, high pH water. Plecos and tinfoils will do much better in softer, lower pH water. Although you could split the difference, neither group will be at their best and you will likely have problems because of it. Also, tinfoil barbs get huge (at least a foot) and require huge tanks. A suggestion: Set up an African cichlid-only tank. That way you can provide the ideal water conditions and have a healthy, happy tank.
