Hello everyone,

I just wanted to take a second and introduce myself. My name is Damon Morris, and (among other things) I guess I'm a bit of a fish enthusiast.

I've been keeping fresh water tanks for at least 15 years now. Mostly cichlid tanks. Maybe exclusively cichlid tanks, now that I think of it. Oscars have been a long time favorite.

Well, recently an old oscar of mine died and it freed up my 55 gallon acrylic tank, so I decided to venture into the saltier side of life.

Right now, I have 2 tanks up and running:

1. 29gallon 'riverbed' tank, which has 3 convict cichlids and a large pleco. I used to breed convicts, and these are 3 from probably 3 different generations. One, I believe, is the mother of the others, but honestly it's hard to tell these days.

2. My 55 gallon tank has had salt water in it for about 4 days, live sand for about 2 and just last night I put in about 35 lbs of (semi) live rock. I also got hold of a prizm pro deluxe skimmer, which I fiddled with for about 3 hours last night with little/no luck. I contacted Red Sea and talked to a real nice lady named 'Pinky' who gave me some good advice, so I'm going to give it a go again this afternoon.

That's about it. Be prepared for a question or two along my way and I look forward to chatting with you all.

Damon

Now what's wrong with a little salt in one's blood?

Well, it's been a couple of days. The tank setup has progressed a bit:

55 gallon tank

40 lbs of live substrate (carib-sea or somesuch)

35 lbs of real nice looking rock that was alive, but has been sitting in cold salt water in someone's basement for a while...so, if there's life in there, it's hibernating.

15 lbs of nice live rock from my local fish store

I ditched that prizm thing. What a turd that was. I tried to get that thing to prime for hours. It would prime occasionally, and then lose prime after a minute or two...aggrivating!

I also bought a heater and brought the tank up to 80-82 degrees.

Oh, and the two emporers are being used for some nice water movement until a suitable skimmer and powerhead can be installed.

A local guy said that I should get a damsel or two and put in there to help with the cycle. I'm not sure how I feel about that, and not even really sure what a damsel even looks like right now.

Anyway,

damon

I think I'd like about 20 more lbs of rock, though, quite honestly. Maybe that'd be too much, but I feel like it'd be alright. ;)

And one of the freshie. Not the best pic, but it was the best I could do right now. ;)
