Roughly how many mixed africans could i fit in a 46 gallon bow front? I know the inch per gallon rule but dont think that is a good guideline to follow.

you're right .. it's a very poor "rule" to follow. if it were my tank i'd have three groups* of 4 fish each.

* a group is one male and three females of the same species.
