We have a 28 gallon bowfront with 6 leopard Danios, 1 marble Hatchet, 2 Otos, 3 Corys and a ton of cherry shrimp (started with 6 and they are breeding like crazy). We had a zebra loach but I haven't seen him in days and I worry that he has died and is inside the ship ornament.
I also have several different types of live plants - cabomba, ludwigia, anacharis, anubias and some floating hornwart. My tank is cycled with 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 5-10 nitrates.

I'd like to get a single larger center piece fish. Will an angel fish work with these other fish?

How large are we talking? Dwarf gouramis are perfect centerpieces but maybe arent as large as you want. Angel fish? I dont know. In a 28g gal. there probably wont be nearly enough room...but dont rely on my advice.

I would recommend getting a couple more hatchetfish. Hatchets should be kept in schools of at least six or they seem to decline and have a much shorter lifespan.

How abouta Betta?

If you want a smallish one, Dwarf Gourami. A bigger one? Pearl Gourami. Both excellent choices.

I got a dwarf gourami for my 29 gallon tank and I didn't like it. It wasn't very peaceful and pestered some of the others in the tank.

Each is different though.

I might get a new one and hope that it isn't so aggressive.

we do have a pair of bettas - one in a 2.5 gallon Eclipse and one in a noisy 1.5 gallon. I considered moving that one over as the little whisper pump for his filter is so loud.
If I did move him over then I probably could not add another fish like a Dwarf or Pearl Gourami too right?
