Howdy,

I have a cheap 3 gallon tank with an under gravel filter (which can be replaced) and 10 watts of full spectrum compact florescent light. The tank houses 1 male Betta.

I don't want to do CO2 but I can fertilize, so would smaller moderate to high light plants work? I would like to do a carpet of grass along with some smaller preferably slower growing stem plants. Any suggestions for or experience with small tanks would be appreciated. Thanks!

Found that in another thread. That has me scratching my head. It's so darn bright in there, I just can't imagine providing any more light. :o

10 watts just isn't enough for high light plants like carpet plants (HC, Glosso) IMO. You could try Marsilea, which will grow in lower light. It looks like Glosso. :)

high light and small is kinda hard to find...can't think of any off top my head beside glosso, but like said above 10w isn't prob goin to cut it. how bout some java moss or other mosses looks good as groundcover or tied down. java fern is another staple tht you should try. i would stay away from more demanding plants and just do a low tech set up with low requirement plants. thts just my opinion.....mainly because im lazy and like to keep things simple
