So, I'm thinking about setting up a new tank full of cichlids.... I like the look of yellow labs, but don't know much about them... what's a good size tank to house these guys?

Also, what other house mates would be good to keep with them... I've seen other blue fish that look just like them in tanks.. also fish that where white and black on top and had a yellow belly...... what type of cichlid are they??

I don't plan on setting up the aquarium for another, 5months... but want to start buying everything.. and doing my research on these fish.....so, many help is much need..

To house Yellow Labs along with some other African cichlids, I'd go with atleast a 55g, so you'll have some options as far as tankmates goes.

I keep my Yellow Labs with Eureka peacocks, C. afra cobue, and P. socolofi albinos. The peacocks (there are other types) are good tankmates because they have a similar temperament (not as aggressive as other Malawians).

Other tankmates could be Rusty Cichlids...and any not too aggressive Mbuna. ;)

A 55G is the best 'starter' size, and then the sky's the limit! A bit of inspiration half way down for you.

I'd go for the less aggressive one. Alternatively, do a gentle species tank like Pseudotropheus salousi - good dimorphic colours, or even melanochromis sp if you want to spice things up a lot!

Whatever you choose, lots of rocks are good. Although I'd debate keeping peacocks and mbuna together though - they occupy different depths/habitats and have differing diets.

Ditto on the 55 for what it sounds like you want to do. Lots of rock work also.

If your getting a 55...I'd suggest stepping up to a 75 (48"x18" footprint). It doesn't cost much more or take much more space and practically just as easy to maintain. But....opens up lots more possibilities. :)
