Ok guys my Jag fry are free swimming now so i thought i would
do a pic diary on how they reached this stage.

I aquired a breeding pair of Jags and less than 48 hrs later
they had spawned, here's a pic of the spawn and mom guarding the eggs.

Two days later they moved the eggs to this cave and you can see the first
of the wrigglers appear, mom ann dad keep a close eye on things.

The parents kept the wrigglers in the cave for 3 days untill the last fry had
found his fins, here they are free swimming.

How long will parenting last? Which fish was the female, which was the male? how long have you had them? What did you do to get them to spawn?

Thanks.

Which fish was the female, which was the male?

The male is the darker coloured fish,
the female is the one guarding the eggs.

how long have you had them?

I've had them 6 mths and they have spawned 5 times in that period.
I only had them 2 days when they first spawned though.
My tank obviously met their breeding requirements for them
to get in breeding mode so quickly.

What did you do to get them to spawn?

I didn't do anything special to get them to spawn..
there was lots of cover in a 100g tank, lots of caves,
and some flat slate rock that all my cichlids seem
to love to spawn on, except my Angels who for some
reason prefer the filter, grr lol.

How long will parenting last?

The jags come into spawning mode every 14 -21 days
so if i want to save some of the fry I have to remove them
to a grow on tank at about 10 days, or the parents will eat
them to make room for the new brood.
I have found that the longer the fry are kept with the parents,
the better they do when you move them on to the grow on tank.
So I try and leave them as long as possible.

Here's a quick video of the Jags spawning
if anyone cares to look....

Wow, very impressive! I'm guessing you sell the fry when they get a bit older?

Thankyou, some of the fry i sell on, but as you wil appreciate
there are way to many to sell them all, so some of them are
are returned to the natural food chain, ie lunch for my other
cichlids.

Really beautiful fish and an excellent video.

I just moved my Jags into a 125 gallon. They have spawned twice in a 60 gallon tank, but both times the eggs never developed. They are both about 5-6 inches long now and i am hoping the bigger tank will help things out.

Sometimes cichlid parents take a while to get the hang of this breeding lark.
good luck with your next spawn Lionboy.
