View Full Version : What type of algae eater can I put with my keyholes and rams?
I do not want a pleco they get to large. I have 2 keyholes, 2 pairs of blue rams, 1 african butterlly and 5 tetras for dither fish in a 35 hex tank. I just want something to help with the algae maintance. Other than that I am not ading any more fish to this set up.
Thanks for your advice. This tank with fish is 20 days old not counting cycling time and all are doing good and water quailty is excellant. :)

A rubberlip pleco (Chaestoma species) or some otos would do well in your tank. The otos might be small enough to be keyhole snacks, so I'd personally opt for the rubberlip (only grow to 4-5" max).

That sounds like a really attractive bunch of fish. Three pairs of cichlids sharing the bottom of a 35 hex though - keep an eye on them for sure! I think things could get ugly when/if they start breeding, even w/ peaceful guys like you've got.
I think keyholes would leave the otos alone, but your tank looks pretty full to me.

i would just scrape the algea or add a snail

rubberlips can be aggressive, and i would worry about one attacking the keyholes. all of them may not be that way, but mine takes his food and his territory very seriously.
maybe a bristlenose. they are more peacful, but also a bit more shy.

My keyhole, angels and festivums all leave my otos alone. What type of tetras did you get? They may become butterfly snacks.
they are Pristella tetras (Pristella maxillaris)

How about a smaller plec like a bristlenose?

female BN..I have male BN's that are 33% larger than my females. they are great non agressive Pleco/catfish.
I tried oto's with my angels but my angels found the oto's 'palettable'(they ate them)
tho I have successfully kept larger oto's with angels in the past.
