really noob question

I want to start a saltwater tank but need some help... I have a 30g and 55g tank (both long).. I know it would be more expensive and hard to tend to the 55 but are there any benifits to having a larger tank besides stocking options??

Wich tank should i use.... I would also like to know what equipment i would need for the tank (minerals, marine salt, heaters, filters, etc.)

hey not a nube question its a good one!
well ull need a good salt like Reef crystals, and test kits for, nitrate/nitrite, ammonia, ph, hardness, and calcium, and also phosphate. then heater, thermometer(digitals better). about 1 pound/gallon sand and 1-2.5 lbs/gallon live rock. you can use a filter for added benefits or a refugum as well. then ull want a skimmer too. the benefits of the 55 would be water stability because its a larger mass, as well as more surface area both of which are very important.
what do you want a reef eventually of just fish?
 
I am also new. It depends on how much you want to spend. The 55g would be better but the cost will be more than the 30g. I have a 29g right now and the darn eclipse hood is bugging me so much :mad:

eclipse systems need to all be melted and turned to little plastic piles....i hate them they are annoying and poorly designed.

what is a skimmer and what does it do??
also i think i will do the 30g and i want to turn it into a reef when i get more experencied
i have also heard of a UV sterilizer do i need that??

i say go with the 50 gallon.. you have more gallons and being new, that is good. little water meants the tank is condensed and if somthing happened then your in trouble.



Skimmers remove dissolved organics leaving your water a bit cleaner


UV filters kill single cell organisms. not really needed but it is good to have.

I totally agree they are anoyying as $^^$^%&%&^(&^$^%$)(*&#@%#*&(#!$#&(^(&^$%#(*&)$%#@&(#@%#@)*&^%&$#%#(&#@^%^*&^%$&&^$#(*&*_(*^%^$#^%*% ugg i hate them. Making my own hood with my bro soon
