I have this green stuff, growing on a piece of driftwood. I like the look of it, but am wondering if it's some type of algea.

Looks like Java moss to me. That's funny, getting it into your tank without noticing. I guess that just shows how adaptable they are, if you got a tiny strand in and it grew like that. They form spores as well, so maybe that's how.

If you're curious to know what it is, just post a pic, I'm sure someone will know, even if I don't. I can also post a few Java moss pics if you want, but I'd have to upload them to my site first. Let me know if you wanna see them.

kswiss, the picture in this thread gives a good idea of Java Moss. It can get loose and grow in skeins and tangles. The strings get longer and longer.
Hair algae, or Black Brush Algae sticks tight with its invisibly small holdfast. It makes a little shaving brush cluster. Or a fringe of little shaving brush clusters. It especially likes the edges of leaves. Its combination of chlorophyll with other pigments makes it grayish rather than green. There are some photos of it at www.thekrib.com
