I do have someone to watch the fish though and he would notice if a fish was sick and call me. He wouldn't be able to do water changes though but he could get medicine. Should I wait till I get back or just go ahead and get them? I have 2 congos, 4 khulis, and 2 pygmy Cory's.

Hi everyone, I have a planted 75G tank which currently has a pair of 3 spot gouramis and a pair of golden gouramis, which have been getting on fine for the last couple of years, (also 4 pygmy corys, 6 danios and an incredibly hardy and lonely flaming tetra), I am looking for tank mates but am limited as to the fish I can get here. I am considering a shoal of false rummynose tetras (Petitella georgiae), has anyone any experience of putting these together, I am concerned that the gouramis may be to aggressive, although in fairness mine are quite shy and tend to go about their business without bothering anyone! Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

I'm looking for fishes with the largest bioload to size ratio or small fishes that can co-exist together in tight groups and small spaces. I'm looking to start a small 5 gallon aquaponics system to test substrates and methods before moving on to a larger setup. If I can find a species that is small and I can have a lot in a small space to start with would be awesome. I'm a nano guy so if I can stick to 1" fish I would. However, larger fishes would be considered for future setups if they are too large for a 5 gallon setup since I do plan on moving to a large setup. I know goldfishes produce a lot of bioload but I want to try something different. I'm trying to make this as sustainable and green as possible so this will be outside for the summer. I live in the upper midwest, Minnesota area so the weather is cool in the spring and fall but hot and humid in the middle of the summer, kind of.

Some fishes I have considered are:
Guppies/endlers
Chili rasboras
Goldfish (don't know which one though, and preferably other fishes)
One of the tiny pygmy corydoras

So again, I'm looking at suggestions of possible fishes for a small aquaponics setup outside in MN.

Thanks.

Hello, Friends!

First-time poster and new member here; hope to make some new friends along the way! My first post/question here revolves around the AquaClear 110 HOB filter and its so-called "flow return control valve" that the AquaClears have...

First, let me explain my setup: I'm running a 60 gallon Marineland "Heartland" tank which houses three fancy goldfish and which is filtered by an Aqueon QuietFlow 55 (good for around 325 gallons per hour, rated) and, on the other side, an AquaClear 110 (good for around 500 gallons per hour, rated). Here's the question I have: When playing with the "flow control" knob atop the 110, it doesn't seem to make any difference in terms of how much water is returning to the tank -- I am concerned with changing the flow only because my goldfish don't seem to care for the heavy current this thing puts out (the Aqueon spits out a ton of water too, but its flow can be better "controlled" based on the level of the water in the tank) but in attempting to lower it, I noticed that there's not much difference between "max" output (the "+" position of the flow lever) and "minimum" output (the "-" position of the lever). Now, depending on who you talk to, some AquaClear owners claim there is a MASSIVE difference between low and high settings on these filters, while others agree with me and say not much is actually "reduced" when you move the lever over to "-"...

Then, there's the flow rate issue -- from what I understand (though this is hazy too) the design of the AquaClears are so that if you run the filter at lowest output, there is more contact time with the media in the basket and the water coming in is continuously re-filtered over and over, thus leading to more polished return water. But I'm concerned that by lowering the flow to minimum/low, those flow rate numbers are going to get reduced from 500GPH to whatever it would drop to, and I need good filtration for my goldies...

Can anyone shed some light on any of these questions/issues for me? Is it normal for me not to be experiencing any visible water return flow difference when switching from max to min on the 110 model? It DOES reduce a BIT -- but it definitely doesn't become a "trickle" like many people told me it should. Further, if I keep it on the minimum amount of flow, will this "decrease" the filtering ability in my tank? Where should I be leaving this lever set to then?

Thank you, in advance...

Hello all :hi:
I've had my 55g planted tank for 3 years and now my small community of cardinal tetras is reduced to only 3. I do take terrific care of my tank but a fish expert told me that my huge angels must have snacked on them or they died of old age... Only found one body. I gave the 2 angels away as I don't think my tank is big enough for them, sadly.
Presently I have only 3 cardinal tetras (not enough for them to be happy)
5 serpaes (from the beginning)
4 redeyes
It is very difficult to buy cardinals and I'm wondering if they could get along with neons, or lemon tetras? or other ideas?
Also I would love to add one or two rams, and any advice will be very much appreciated.

Following my recent 29g tank disaster (it cracked and leaked), I wanted to set something up in it's place as quickly and cheaply as possible. For a replacement I went with a 20g long, since my existing stand, lighted hood, filtration and heater were a direct swap, going from 29 to 20g. Well... that, and I was afraid to go with another 29g.

I setup the new 20g with brand-new gravel, a few fake plants and small rocks from the 29g, the sponge filter and HOB filter from the 29g and all new dechlorinated water. I then transfered my 21 fish from their temporary storage tote, to their new 20g home.

~5 days later, my water parameters are 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 20ppm nitrate. I never saw any ammonia or nitrites. Instant cycle as they say! I know several of you have suggested this in the past. I just wanted to post about it's great success.

Not only are air powered sponge filters cheap, I have a feeling they can pack quite the colony of beneficial bacteria. My Top Fin 30 HOB filter has only a thin section of biological filtration downstream of the replaceable mechanical filtration pad. My guess is the sponge filter did most of the work here.
