My wife and I decided to get a Fluval Spec 5 gallon aquarium for our son's 4th birthday (and we are loving it as well). We put the aquarium on his dresser and it has become his nightlight (moon setting). Each morning we say good morning to the fish, etc...

I've noticed that everything is not level. Some of this might be due to having the aquarium on the back of the dresser causing it to tilt or perhaps the floor isn't as level as I assumed.

Is this something that I should be concerned about or is it ok to let it be and continue enjoying the aquarium?

TL;DR: Should I get 12 x 2 types of tetras or 8 x 3 types?

I'm in the process of gradually stocking a 55g FWDSB riparium. The actual tank dimensions are 48"x21"x22", so the volume of water is 55g (measured out as I was filling the tank for the first time), but it has a bit more floorspace than your standard 55g.
It's currently planted with a few different types of swords and some dwarf hair grass. As well as a bit of duckweed and a water hyacinth on the surface.
I've got a large sponge filter (rated for 80g).
Two 100 W heaters that keep the tank at a balmy 25 C.
And two T5HO flourescents (one full spectrum, one roseate) on an 8-hour timer for lighting.

As far as stock goes, I have:
8 x bronze/green cory cats (C. aeneus)
8 x black neon tetras (H. herbertaxelrodi)
4 x cardinal tetras (P. axelrodi)
1 x ghost shrimp (P. paludosus?)

I'm planning on adding 4 more cardinal tetras in a week or two. (The current ones have only been in there for a few days, and I don't want to shock the tank by adding too many things at once.) I'm also hoping to add a few (read: 5-7) marble hatchetfish at some point. And probably a handful of additional ghost shrimp eventually as well (although, I'm kind of enjoying having just the one in there atm). Also planning a bunch more plants as I can get my hands on them: arrowheads (above the water), more swords, etc.

My original plan was to get a few more of each of the tetra species to bring it up to two schools of 10-12. However, I also really love glowlight tetras and have been wondering if I might want to get a small school of them instead. I know it's often better to get larger groups of a few fish than just a few individuals of many different species. However, do you think groups of 8 are large enough? Or would I be better off going for 12?

I know I could probably just do three groups of 12 tetra varieties and not be overstocked, but I like the idea of keeping things relatively sparse for now. I'd rather err on the side of understocked than overstocked. Besides which, I enjoy watching my fish, but I don't really want the tank to be super "busy". So, keeping that in mind, two dozen tetras sounds like plenty to me, it's just a matter of whether I spread that number out over two types or three. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated. :)

Hello all,

I just joined this forum and my tank has been up and running for about a month.
I cycled it using AquaBella and my tank is crystal clear and all parameters are great.
No fish deaths yet.

Being a freshwater tank, I can't install a protein skimmer and I think there is a layer of
it on the surface of the water. When I look up toward the surface I can see an "oil" layer
there. My surface skimmer on the Aquatop doesn't seem to remove this but it does a great
job at removing surface particles.

So my question is what is the best way to remove this layer? I image that this may be affecting
gas exchange at the surface of the water.

Thanks.

(Sorry for posting this in two places, but I really wanted to make sure I could get some help as quickly as possible)

Hello all. I have frequented these forums for some time to browse existing threads and just glean as much information as I can, but now I need some very specific advice. I recently went on a 5 day vacation and bought automatic fish feeders for my 29 and 125 gallon freshwater tanks. I set them up a day in advance to make sure they were working properly, and they seemed to have worked ok in my absence. HOWEVER, I returned to find 2 dead fish in my 125, a female betta that was thriving before we left, and a rubber lip pleco that was added to the tank a few weeks back, but seemed to be doing fine nevertheless. Now my tank looks to be infested with Ick. My three Pictus Cats and one remaining Pleco (a Clown Pleco) have it really bad. My other fish seem stressed, especially my Bala Sharks, but I don't see any white spots on any of the other fish. I have read to treat this naturally by raising the tank temp to 86 degrees and leaving it there for two weeks. I've started gradually raising the tank temp by a few degree increments every couple hours, and now one of my Pictus Cats is breathing super heavy and not moving a lot. I have a 10 gallon that I can setup quickly and treat this guy with Ick Guard, but I'm just not sure what to do. I've already done a 50% water change after removing the dead fish, and I'm going to do another 25% water change tomorrow. My ammonia measured less than 0.25 ppm after the water change (I didn't measure before) with an API liquid test kit. I don't want to lose any more fish, but I feel that it is inevitable with the way some are stressed (especially my Pictus Cats). In addition to the 3 Pictus Catfish and 1 Clown Pleco, I also have a weather loach, 6 denison's barbs, 3 rosy barbs, 3 congo tetras (I know both the rosies and congos are schooling fish but that's all the LFS had when I purchased them, and I plan to complete the schools when they get more of each in stock), 6 bala sharks, and our favorite fish in the tank are a pair of Kribensis Cichlids. All of the barbs, tetras, and the weather loach seem to be the most unaffected right now, while the kribs and balas are stressed with no white spots. The Pictus Cats and Pleco are lethargic and not looking good. I guess my plan is to continue to increase the temperature of the tank to 86 degrees and hold it there for 2 weeks with frequent 20-25% water changes. I've added an extra airstone in addition to my two emperor 400 filters and bubbling volcano for a little extra aeration. I also have several live plants in the tank, so they should help with the aeration as well. I'm mostly worried about the weather loach with the high temp, since he's more a cold water fish. My normal tank temp is set at 75 degrees, so 86 seems like it will be quite an adjustment for my fish. I hope I'm doing the right thing. I treated with Seachem Prime and added a small amount of Seachem Neutral Regulator with my 50% water change. I also added a couple cap fulls of API Stress Zyme to help with the ammonia levels. I purchased some Ick Guard from PetSmart to treat if necessary, but I'm afraid to resort to medication if I can cure this naturally. My LFS was unfortunately closed by the time I got home this evening, so I couldn't go to them for advice.

I've educated myself as best I can using the internet as a resource, but any advice from seasoned fish keepers is greatly appreciated.

they were the result of a Christmas present from a relative. we received a tank, filter ect, and two females, one heavily pregnant, pale pearly blue tail with darker pearly blue body. and a yellow/green male that's either a English lace or a snakeskin, but im edging more towards the lace. anyway I digress. the pregnant female gave birth but a week later to several fry, a few didn't survive but 4 males did and 8 females did too. one female is a blonde with big black spots on her tail. the others are all pale grey with varying spotting patterns on their tails. the males however are lovely!! one is exactly like his mum, the others are like rainbows!! their heads and torso are bluey green, top fin and top of back are a pinky purply orange (hard to describe) an its tail is split in two colour wise, its top half is bright orange and its bottom half is bright yellow. random black spotting on all rainbow males tails. I will try and attach pics. any ideas what they are or a cross of?? tia xx<img src="http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=207546&d=1371077093&thumb=1" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.

Before I get fish in there are there any aquascaping tips? I watched a video on youtube which at first I thought was chronically pretentious but afterwards had me thinking. This guy James Findley obviously knows what he's doing and he achieved (albeit on a much larger scale) something close to what I want to do with a large population of Neon tetra.

The tank is second hand and when I picked it up the guy filled a 20 litre container with water from the tank to add when I got it home. He also gave me the plants pictured. The log and rocks are stuff I picked up. I waited 24 hours for the water to settle and after work today I came home to marvel at my new purchase, it would appear I was also sold some trumpet snails too. I've read they are only a problem if they overpopulate, I don't mind them being in there now but if they add to overcrowding problems I would much rather have fish than these. Do they help with the Nitrogen cycle in a new(ish) tank?

<img src="http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=207535&d=1370968781&thumb=1" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version.
I unopened my shiny new test kit to give it a try and everything was normal (as Authmal advised in my original post) although when I got to the Nitrate test this was quite high, I would say 80ppm. Is this a good thing or a bad thing considering before transit the tank was well established (2 years with fish in). For reference the tapwater I added I treated with Interpet Bioactive Tapsafe, I also added a dose of Interpet Filter Start and some Nutron Flora for the plants to keep the plants happy.

Hello all,

This summer I plan on installing a 75 gal. planted tank with a mostly South American/Amazon biotope. I have no experience dealing with this biotope from the water parameters to the species of fish and flora so I am trying to get as much advice as possible before I even start cycling. So far, all I have is the stand which is assembled and in place. I am going on vacation in a few weeks so I am waiting until the first of July to set up the tank, giving me time to research each component before I start my install. The following is a list of every item from stand to substrate that I think I be using.

Equipment.
-75 gal. Topfin Aquarium 48.5"L x 18.5"W x 21.8"H
-Topfin 75 gal. stand
-Lighting (Need help here. Not sure of the specs on the factory hood.)
-Eheim Classic Canister 2215 164gph or Jebo 825 Canister
-Eheim Liberty 200gph or equivalent hang-on filter which I plan on replacing carbon with peat balls. Good or bad idea?
-50w Heater + Thermostat (A little uncertain about the watts I need.)
-Co2 System (Still researching brands and techniques. Do I even need one?)
-API Master test kit

Substrate and decor
-Seachem Flourite (only plant substrate I can find locally)
-White sand
-Various rocks for caves and accents
-Driftwood

Plants (probably need the most help here)
-Rotala indica
-Wisteria
-Java moss
-Java fern
-Amazon sword
-Dwarf grass

Fishes! In order in which I'd add to the tank.
10-15 True rummy nose tetras
3-5 corys (peppered most likely or albino)
3-5 Bolivian rams
3-5 otocinclus cats
These are rough numbers but 25-30 fish is my target. Might add 2 or 3 angels to top everything off.

Layout (in general): Heavily planted on both ends. Open in the middle with a large peice of driftwood dividing the tank. I'll also have 2 or 3 caves or rockpiles for the rams' territories

Stablizing the water will probably be my toughest task. Our tap water here is hard and alkaline (ph 8.2).

Well there it is. My goal with the species selection of plant and fish, in one word, is harmony. If anyone has any suggestions on how to achieve this goal I'd love to hear them. As I stated on my intro thread I have had very little experience with this style of aquarium and any guidance would be much appreciated by both me and my future plants and fish. I'm sure I'll have more questions soon and I'll try and share images of my progress. Many thanks!!

Hi Aquaria central

So today I agreed a price for a Juwel Lido 120 from someone nearby and I'm really excited for my new purchase! Just wanted to get a bit of advice so I can get the best from my new setup.

I have a little experience with freshwater aquariums as I had a few at different points growing up but its been about 15 years since the last one. I remember being overcome with excitement when my little guppies gave birth and spent my time staring at the hatchlings in their little growing chamber. Those were the days.:nilly:

Anyway I was hoping to get as much enjoyment out of an aquarium this time round but thought I could be a bit more ambitious. I've been doing a bit of research and I think I would be happiest with a reasonably low maintenance planted aquarium. The lady selling me the tank is supplying it with its current gravel and some plants: I think there was some Java fern and some form of anubia in there. They were growing fine under the light currently with the tank so I will carry on with that setup, I don't fancy getting into CO2 and all the rest of it. Not just yet anyway. She said she will also leave 10-20% of the water in there when she empties it so the natural bacteria remains. Whats the best way to test natural bacteria in a tank and the hardness of water in my area? maybe there is a decent article someone can link me to?

Now as for stock I remember seeing a fantastic tank in a shop once which had about 30 Neon tetras shoaling perfectly, I'd like to re-create something like this but am not sure how to get them to do that or whether I would have better luck with a different species, perhaps harlequins of some sort. Really I just want one or maybe 2 big shoals in the tank that sometimes merge into one bigger shoal, any other stock would be for maintenance. So a pleco of some sort and then I have read about invertebrates which are good for cleaning, I think a shrimp of some variety would be nice.

So: Am I making any grave errors or are there any top tips before I spend more money?
How many Tetras/Harlequins in a 120ltr Lido to make a nice school and how can I get the fish to school tightly?
Is there a good type of pleco you can recommend?
A nice shrimp or crab for extra housekeeping?

Any help is greatly appreciated and I will of course add some photos/Youtube vids of my success or failure if People are interested.

Thanks
Dan

I had a 20 Gal long terrarium tank for my leo gecko but I have since upgraded her tank to a better suited one for her lighting needs. Anywho, I now have an empty tank sitting here. My son's 7th birthday is coming up and it just so happens he has requested fish. Obviously I will be disinfecting the tank thoroughly and buying a filter for it considering it didn't have one for the leo.

Interesting Stocking ideas? He has anxiety issues so would really enjoy watching them in his room at night. I don't want to break my wallet either :)

Thanks in advance!

Bank in the day, I had a 20 gal freshwater tank and things were simple. Not so today, you have to have a degree in chemistry to get things right! Anyway....I was given 4 mystery snails. Fascinating critters....but now theyve dont the wild thing and I have an egg mass on the side of my HOB filter. Will these new critters find their way back into the tank when they hatch? I have mostly tets on the tank, which has turned out to be a very healthy community tank. in other news...anybody want some mystery snails?
