Hi. I stumbled upon this forum while trying to learn more about fishkeeping. I have two goldfish and a betta (each has his/her own tank). But anyway, in order to get my Bachelor's degree, I need to do this sophisticated senior project. I witnessed a lot of ethics violations concerning fish care at my school, so I wanted to do a behavioral/ethics-oriented fish experiment. I wanted to get feedback from hardcore fish enthusiasts like the people of this forum. My dream is to introduce interesting and safe objects to my fish (and perhaps store fish) to stimulate their senses and maybe allow them to have a more-enriched life. I saw fish at my school with NOTHING in their tanks, and I felt really sorry for them. So, this experiment is going to be designed as a wake-up call, that organisms (even if used for science) should have good, stimulating lives. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of objects I could use based on the behaviors of their own fish... I was thinking short PVC pipe to maybe hide in or play in, maybe a bright plastic floating ball they could poke at, something moving outside of the tank that resembles possible food items... I'm not sure what else fish might "like" that is safe to test. Any input is appreciated. Nothing is "stupid."

Thanks for reading!

Hello I'm new to this forum but I was hoping I could get some good advice here.
I'm looking for some solid sources on canister design and function. Why? In short, because I'm a engineering student (engineering science mechanics) and I want to build my own canister filter. I have some design questions such as:

best flow rate for piping?
best flow rate for the canister interior?
does pressure affect nitrifying bacteria?
ideal temp. for nitrifying bacteria?
canister size vs. tank size?
media (for bacteria) surface area vs tank size?
media?
Anything else appropriate to canister design or nitrifying bacteria growth.

I understand answers to many of these questions will be function of tank size. Also I have not bought anything or taken any steps towards building the canister yet so any thing is still on the table. Thanks in advance. May the best advice win!

Hello all. I have frequented these forums for some time to browse existing threads and just glean as much information as I can, but now I need some very specific advice. I recently went on a 5 day vacation and bought automatic fish feeders for my 29 and 125 gallon freshwater tanks. I set them up a day in advance to make sure they were working properly, and they seemed to have worked ok in my absence. HOWEVER, I returned to find 2 dead fish in my 125, a female betta that was thriving before we left, and a rubber lip pleco that was added to the tank a few weeks back, but seemed to be doing fine nevertheless. Now my tank looks to be infested with Ick. My three Pictus Cats and one remaining Pleco (a Clown Pleco) have it really bad. My other fish seem stressed, especially my Bala Sharks, but I don't see any white spots on any of the other fish. I have read to treat this naturally by raising the tank temp to 86 degrees and leaving it there for two weeks. I've started gradually raising the tank temp by a few degree increments every couple hours, and now one of my Pictus Cats is breathing super heavy and not moving a lot. I have a 10 gallon that I can setup quickly and treat this guy with Ick Guard, but I'm just not sure what to do. I've already done a 50% water change after removing the dead fish, and I'm going to do another 25% water change tomorrow. My ammonia measured less than 0.25 ppm after the water change (I didn't measure before) with an API liquid test kit. I don't want to lose any more fish, but I feel that it is inevitable with the way some are stressed (especially my Pictus Cats). In addition to the 3 Pictus Catfish and 1 Clown Pleco, I also have a weather loach, 6 denison's barbs, 3 rosy barbs, 3 congo tetras (I know both the rosies and congos are schooling fish but that's all the LFS had when I purchased them, and I plan to complete the schools when they get more of each in stock), 6 bala sharks, and our favorite fish in the tank are a pair of Kribensis Cichlids. All of the barbs, tetras, and the weather loach seem to be the most unaffected right now, while the kribs and balas are stressed with no white spots. The Pictus Cats and Pleco are lethargic and not looking good. I guess my plan is to continue to increase the temperature of the tank to 86 degrees and hold it there for 2 weeks with frequent 20-25% water changes. I've added an extra airstone in addition to my two emperor 400 filters and bubbling volcano for a little extra aeration. I also have several live plants in the tank, so they should help with the aeration as well. I'm mostly worried about the weather loach with the high temp, since he's more a cold water fish. My normal tank temp is set at 75 degrees, so 86 seems like it will be quite an adjustment for my fish. I hope I'm doing the right thing. I treated with Seachem Prime and added a small amount of Seachem Neutral Regulator with my 50% water change. I also added a couple cap fulls of API Stress Zyme to help with the ammonia levels. I purchased some Ick Guard from PetSmart to treat if necessary, but I'm afraid to resort to medication if I can cure this naturally. My LFS was unfortunately closed by the time I got home this evening, so I couldn't go to them for advice.

I've educated myself as best I can using the internet as a resource, but any advice from seasoned fish keepers is greatly appreciated.

My name it Trey and I hail from a small town in northern Mississippi. I have some experience in fish keeping but I still consider myself very much a novice. My first aquarium as a kid was a 10 gal. platy tank that I kept for years. Later I discovered cichlids at a local Wal-Mart and thought they would look so cool with my platys... Thus I learned my first two lessons about cichlids; They do not play well with platys and I needed a bigger tank. Since those days I fell in love with cichlids and kept tanks of Jack Dempseys and Jewel cichlids for years but after moving twice I decided to give tanks and all away. That was 11 years ago. I am basically starting from scratch but I want to try something new and still incorperate my favorite species. I am currently planning a 75 gal. planted community tank featuring Bolivian rams. My main goal in registering on these forums is to get advice and help from the ground up and to share the experience. I have never kept a tank this big, nor do I have experience with planted tanks or rams so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions!

Hi all, I am posting this just to let you know I would like to become a part of this community again. First, I would just like to say I have matured, and am now 16 years old. With this title comes the fact that I need to grow up. So to do this my dad says I need to face my fears. this is one of them, facing the hundreds of people who I had annoyed and angered and letting them know that I have lost many a night of sleep obsessively wondering what some of you members might have thought of me. I would like to say I am sorry. I am sorry for causing such a disturbance. I am sorry for angering a few mods, no probably all of them. I am most of all sorry to JK47. Due to me personally not wanting to disturb the mods, I will only be logging in perhaps once a week (if that). Im not going to download the app, simply because that causes too much of a temptation. And I got a job a few weeks ago, im working as a bagger at Safeway. I don't have the time for fun anymore. And I dont have the itches to post any longer. That disappeared long ago. In fact, i find it difficult to post, its a huge embarrassment (as it should be). But its a walk of shame that must be endured. If it helps, I thought about taking my own life shortly after everything blew up.

1 question I have asked on the other forum (but with lacking results) and something that when I read about was very argued about, is about aquarium-safe materials. I have read that lego is totally safe, but I have also read that the paint in lego could be toxic, and I don't want to take risks, so can anyone confirm, maybe from experience if it's okay? and there's also the German brand, playmobil. I was wondering if anyone knew if they are safe, because I have a hoop and some other playmobil things I could use to teach my fish tricks instead of buying something like the R2 fish school kit. I really wanted to use it, but I could find absolutely no information on whether or not it's safe to use. :help2:

Although I am not new to keeping fish as a hobby, we are starting to do many new things and I found the advice here very helpful several times. Currently, we have a 35 gallon brackish puffer-fish tank, a 225 gallon Oscar/mixed tank and a 55 gallon angelfish tank. We are hoping to gradually change our puffer tank to full marine and began this by starting a brackish tank which my puffers seem to thrive in, they are big fat healthy boys (or girls not sure)! Thank you all for such excellent opinions and advice. This is the first forum I have ever joined and look forward to it!
My wife and I even had a small online supply store for a while. We had to get away from aquariums for a while. Now we are back. We have a wonderful 75 gal planted community with some ottos, amano shrimp, orange chelas, harlequins, and one (for now) dwarf cichlid.
