So it's been about 4 years since I last ran a saltwater tank and I've managed to forget about 80% of everything I knew about them. Hence, this thread. I'll do this in parts: My Plans, My Setup, and My Questions.
My Plans:
I would like to set up a 30 gallon reef tank with a few fish. It doesn't...
tl:dr - Bunch of fish stuff and opinions and experienced based opinions and such.
--------------------------------------
Not sure if this was mentioned already but way back on page 4 (for me) you guys all mentioned stocking. My opinion of stocking is simple: If the fish are healthy & happy...
Duckie, I gave it up because rebuilding it would have taken time and money I didn't have at the time. I'm hoping that I'll be able to run one again someday but not until my finances are more stable and I'm out of college and not living in my mothers basement xD
As for the plants - I don't know...
Just want to say I read the original story on this and it was awesome! It's cool to see someone who found a fish they love way back when they started and they still love it almost 50 years later. I tip my hat to you :)
And poor Mr. Goldfinger xD
(I skipped everything after the story sorry).
I will take this moment in time to note the following statements:
1) I know a common pleco will outgrow the tank. He hasn't yet and I'm looking for people to rehome him to in my area (pickup only, still can't drive lol). PM me if interested, general region of Montgomery County/King Of Prussia...
(Not sure if these are still allowed lol)
So the last time I posted anything on these forums it was 2012 and my tanks were a great deal less developed than they are now. I'm looking to show off (a little) and get feedback about my tanks and just discuss them in general, since it's been years...
Get some water test results, it's either an ammonia spike/recyle or Old Tank Syndrome I think. The symptoms are accurate to it (loss of weak/not-hardy fish, gulping for air).
Hmmm... a group of ottos for the bottom, 6 neons for the middle, and a dwarf gouramis (I suggest either a Flame Dwarf Gouramis or a Sparkling Gouramis) would make for a nice balanced tank :)
You could easily triple the schools of platy and molly, but they will do that themselves if you give them a few weeks to breed lol. Same with the gupplies.
Regarding larger fish, rams are always a good addition, but you could do a school of rainbowfish (they get like double the size of...
I would avoid doing so. The reason: rams may be very passive, but when breeding they will become aggressive towards all other fish. I wouldn't want to have two pairs of rams in the same tank unless it was at least 6ft long and had lots of decor on the lower levels to break up sight and allow for...
Those fish will (with time) fill that tank up quite a bit more than you may expect. Also, I like that stock :)
Well, for the most part we try not to lose fish, but on the off chance one dies we either a) have a clean up crew (shrimp/bottom feeders) that will take care of it or b) have a tank...
Personally I think the tank looks quite nice as-is. I find that an overfilled tank ends up looking cluttered after a bit of time and when the fish grow out. Also must ask, what is the size of the tank, and what is the stock?
I also suggest the Black Neons, but be warned that they won't always stay packed together. I have a school of 5 in my 75gal (I'm bumping it up to 9 soon) and they tend to be more scattered around the tank than in a single school.
