    Advice from Big Als

Hi There, I am looking into converting my 29g freshwater into a saltwater. I want to do a FOWLR. I was at the Big Als in Edmonton yesterday and received the following advice and want to hear your comments: 1. As my tank only has a standard lighting package, he recommended upgrading to a...

Could I have a pregnant Otto Cat?

A couple of my otto's are the same way. I put four of them in a tank after a fishless cycle and had a pretty good amount of brown algae. I just chaulked it up to them eating really well because they are still going strong, keeping my tank nice and clean. Eager

    What to do next-re: recycling

I am not sure I follow you, are the fish still in the tank? If not, then I would suggest beginning a fishless cycle from the beginning. You will need to add an ammonia source. If yes, then keep doing the water changes. Eager

Ideas for a new 10 gallon tank

I have 6 X-ray terta (Pristella maxillaris) in my 29 gallon (among others). They would be nice - look cool, really active, school and only grow to 1.8 in max. Eager

    Fishless Cycling Shortcut

Hey Luca, I totally comend your willingness to try and improve the process and thank you for it. I am at a loss for what to say here because I have no experience with your method and all we are talking about is theories. It may very well have worked for your tank, but I would need to see it...

    Fishless Cycling Shortcut

Hi Luca, If I understand you correctly, I don't think you are doing anything drastically different - except skipping the nitrIte tests or adding more ammonia to top up to 5ppm. Not sure if this would speed things up though. IMO adding ammonia keeps the nitrite production humming. As...

I have seen an oscar get to 12 inches- not a lot of swimming room if you have a 10 gallon that measures about 12 inches long. Eager

hey im a newb and i have some questions.

I was at my cousins over the weekend and all he has in his tank is a Tiger Oscar and a pleco. That is all his 65 gallon will hold. He has had his oscar for 2 years now and it is 13 inches. If you are prepared to deal with a fish that gets to be this size then go for it, but just remember that...

    Need some advice

With my relatively limited experience in fish keeping I have come to the conclusion that it is up to me to do the research to make a decision. I do not rely on the LFS person. Case in point - (1) suggestion to cycle the tank with 4 dwarf gouramis; and on a second occasion (2) asked for 6...

    disorantated

First thought is test your water. What is your ammonia, what is your nitrite? These fish like cooler temperatures as well (8.0°C - 22.0°). However, as it is just the one showing symptoms, that may indicate a specific problem to its swim bladder or other part of its body. Sorry this...

    Fishless Cycle and Stocking

Update... Well my tank finished cycling over this past weekend so I did one final check with 5ppm of ammonia and it burned through that in about 6 hours to readings of ammonia and nitrIte at 0ppm. Did a huge water change (90%), set the temp, let the tank sit for about 24 hours, did a final...

    cycling with decomposing meat

Hey cdawson, Some links I found (not sure if you have seen them yet): http://www.reefsource.com/Information%20Sources/fishless_cycle.htm http://www.pgtropicals.com/ARTICLES/fcvaa.html The cycle is not done when just ammonia hits 0.00. It is done when ammonia and nitrItes have both...

    Airpump and airstones?

I added an airstone to my tank primarily for the looks. Originally I bought an Elite pump but took it back after I plugged it in and thought my pictures were going to fall off the wall (ok, slight exaggeration but it was loud). I replaced it with a Rena #50 and it is much quieter (not silent...
