TEL - If I am not mistaken one of the main reasons for using bio balls is because of the air gaps within them allowing thier surface to be exposed more to water and air such as in a wet/dry filter were air is also curculating through the media. For non wet/dry apps (were your media is completely underwater) you'd not normally use bio-balls.
