This is my first time using a canister filter and I am wondering what to do when doing a water change. I generally unplug the HOB filters during a water change and then fill with water and re plug. What do I have to do for the canister ? If I unplug it, will I have to prime it again or will it start up again just by plugging it in?

As long as your water level does NOT go below the intake strainer, the filter should not need to be unplugged or re-primed.

You can pretty much do the same thing. It should typically resume and you don't need to re-prime. Which one of the fluval 06 series canister did you get?

I got the 406 and so far it is working perfectly, but wow, is it heavy when full of water! Thanks for your help.

Yes thanks. I now realize that I have to turn off aquastop valve. I think that is what it's called , but I now know what to do. Thanks to you who responded, and read my manual 3x more.
