Ok let me explain further. That thing about the cories was for the stocking for the 40 gallon breeder, when I could not get the 40 gallon breeder I started a new stocking plan for a 38 gallon. When I started the stocking plans I made my stocking plans revolve around these two fish. Sorry for not making that clear before hand.

However you want to twist it, you got a tank and then decided what the best fish you like can go in it. You couldn't find the 40B you wanted, so you compromised on the fish. If you really wanted the first choice of fish you made you would have waited until you found the right tank. 40B can always be had in Petco's gallon dollar sales which happen more than once a year. Can't beat that for new - good luck finding a 40B used if the $40 is an issue.

The place that supplied petco its tank discontinued those tanks and I was not sure if they would have them in the next dollar per gallon sale went on. Also the difference is 2 gallons. So I did not compromise much in stocking.

Are all 40g tanks called 40g breeders? If not, what is the difference between a plain 40 and a 40b?

40B is the short version of 40 gal @ 36x18x17. There is a long 40 gal same footprint as normal 55 at 48x13x17.

If you go by inch per gallon rule (if you want to call that a rule), then no 2 gallons makes little difference. Dimensions say something different - the extra 6 inches in length when comparing a 29 to a 30 (or 38 to 40) is huge.

Yes, I have to admit that 6 inches can make a big difference. Not just for the fish itself. When I got my first "big" tank it was a 29 gallon. it was called a 30 gallon on the box and the stand we bought for the tank said it was safe for 30 gallons. It was NOT 36 inches, it was only 30 inches. Ok if 6 inches is huge, then do you think that I still can have my 12 cories?

Cories will still be fine in the smaller footprint if you ask me. You probably could have put more than 12 in the 40. But I am no expert on cories. The only problem with cories in the 38 I could see is the height to length ratio with the 38 being very tall.
