Unfortunately I have noticed that white substrate attracts algae a lot more...my favorite substrate is the small fine brown pea gravel Petco sells: http://www.petco.com/product/115871/...um-Gravel.aspx

Yeah. Painting is easy. Latex is the easiest to remove if you ever want to change it.

What about just a cork? Seems like the simplest way to drain it quickly, you could even have various holes for whatever levels you wanted to keep it at.
