I'm waiting for the gallon per dollar sale at Petco, which should be next month. I'm wanting to upgrade the 20L to a larger tank, either a 29 or a 40 breeder. Which would be better for rainbows? The 20L will be converted into a new home for my leopard gecko, who's in a 10g right now.

Would I be able to keep a small group of yoyo loaches in a 40 breeder? Leaning more towards the 40.. But what are you're guys thoughts?

40 breeder, hands down! Personally I wouldn't put a group of yoyos into anything less then a 75g, 55g maybe but not any 3ft tank.

Well I am sure our loach nuts will chime in but in the meantime... Kuhli loaches are always a popular choice, easy to find, easy to keep, inexpensive and their elongated bodies are a nice change in appearance. If I ever find a good deal though sids (dwarf chain loaches) would be my first choice in my next next loach addition and a big group would be quite happy in a 40B.

There are smaller loaches that would be happy in a 40g; sids, striatas & kubotai (angelicus), kuhlis. Yoyos would be ok in a 55g. Slightly smaller histrionicas are similar to younger yoyos in color & a bit more mellow but still a bit big for a 40 breeder. Sids are expensive because they're all bred by hormone injection in the pet trade, they've been "red listed" for ~30 years now.

M. praecox, the couple times I've had them, were disease prone (I meant to post about it but still depressed). Definitely QT if possible.

I would do Kuhli loaches but they are not that easy to find in my area. Went to 4 different stores and never found them. Angelicus loaches might be a good one, a bit pricey, but I can find those easily compared to kuhlis.

I read that somewhere. Kind of using the 20L as a hospital tank/holding tank till I can get the 40B.

There is a stargate in my aquarium.
The 40B is one of my favorite sizes of tank. I'd go for that, as it will give almost any fish more room to roam, plus the depth gives you more room for creative aquascaping.. No sure if it's a good size for rainbows, though: don't they prefer an even longer tank, such as a 75?
