My town is under a boil order until further notice...I need to do a water change soon and I am worried it is going to wreck my tank. Any suggestions?

I would pull a 5 gal. bucket and treat and test.

It's probably not an issue, fish swim happily in water that could teach Montezuma a thing or two about revenge, but you could always boil some water and let it cool.

If I buy bottled water, does it need to be distilled or anything?

Boiling was my first thought but that is a lot of water.

Don't use distilled unless your tap water is EXTREMELY soft. Otherwise use spring water.

Awesome! Thank you. And even better news I just checked our villiages website and the bo has been lifted! But I know what to do next time thanks to your help.

Test for what? Do you have a microbiological lab in your house?
You don't have a test kit? Treat with prime if your water is chlorinated and test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Nitrates are why they have boil water warnings.

Fyi boiling will likely increase the nitrate level of the water. Nitrates don't evaporate, but since some of the water will, the nitrate level will doubtless be higher after boiling.
