How Freshwater Deep Sand Beds Work

I've had my DSB going in my 155 for about 2+ years now. Just recently survived 5 days of power outage without any spikes in levels. I really don't think I need my filter running at all.

The government has come out with new lighting standards that specify Lumens per Watt, as such some bulbs are now being removed from the market. More information here. http://www.geconsumerandindustrial.com/environmentalinfo/regulations_resources/2009_doe_regulations.htm

    African Inverts for biotope?

Been reading some more and those species of Nerite may range into western africa, I can't find anything certain. Although apparantly the species Pachymelania byronensis is from Gabon, but its very rare in the hobby. Some Genara of apple snails also originate there but Im having a devil of a...

    African Inverts for biotope?

I have done some more research and it turns out that some varieties of snail occasionally sold as Zebra Nerites would be appropriatte. Specifically Neritina natalensis and Vittina coromandeliana.

FS African Cichlids - Pickup or Meet in NJ, DE, MD, VA & NC - Farmingdale NJ 07727

I only mention it because it really "Pops" visually. I have the black colorquartz and it looks very drab, with a greyish cast to it. Whereas the tahitian moon looks deeply black, pearlescant and reflective.

As an aside, what substrate do you use in your tank, that looks beautiful.

    African Inverts for biotope?

Thanks for the the heads up Ms. I am trying to create a specific biotope but its going to take a lot of research to do it right, and it all depends how "accurate" I want to be. Fishbase has been an absolute godsend in this area. I was able to quickly look at the fish in the ecosystem and...

    African Inverts for biotope?

Does anyone know of any inverts available in the hobby that would be appropriatte for a Niger river biotope tank? I know of Atya Gabonensis (Vampire Shrimp), which is found primarily in a river which feeds the Niger (which means there are probably more then a few crawling around the niger...

    Largest possible Neon Tetra tankmate

Well I was hoping that the little bit of extra size that a rummynose has would give it a better chance with small cichlids like keyholes and rainbows.

    Largest possible Neon Tetra tankmate

How about if I bump it up a nothc and forget about the neons. What is the largest possible tankmate I could have with rummynose (other then Discus).

    Carpet and moss questions

Here is my situation, I currently have a 155 gallon bowfront that I'm trying to get some good carpet (and moss) action in. However my efforts have so far only led to failure. The tank has a 4x96 watt fixture, with 2 10000k bulbs, and 2 10000k/6700k 50/50s on it, running a 9 hour...

    Largest possible Neon Tetra tankmate

Currently the Keyhole Cichlid is in the lead, assuming I can find one of a reasonable size locally. Discus sound perfect if not for that whole, ridiculously difficult and expensive to keep and maintain, with requirements that will hurt all the other fish thing. What about geophagus, I haven't...

    Largest possible Neon Tetra tankmate

Leporinus is another fish that I've seen mentioned as a "good community fish" but looks like it may enjoy a neon tetra snack. I also wouldn't be averse to having a big herbivorous fish in there if thats what it takes. The tank is planted but my wisteria and other stem plants grows so quickly...

    Largest possible Neon Tetra tankmate

Just wondering, what is the largest generally safe neon tetra tankmate? I like my schooling tank with neons and Rummynose but I'd like a centerpiece of some sort. Some sort of beefy 4+ inch fish that will break up the visual outline. I have a bushynose, a Twig and a whiptail catfish and they...

Best way to move an inhabited large tank

I don't think I'm aware of it ever being done successfully. And I'm aware of more then one attempt. Best bet is to put a trap in there and wait, let the only food in the tank be in the trap and eventually the bulk of the shrimp will make it in there.
