    Osteochilus hasseltii - Hard-lipped Barb

I'm glad you guys appreciate them like I do! I'll try to get a pic when I can- they are still quite shy. I got them from Texas Tropical & Marine in San Antonio. They have 2 large ones (about 5" or so) that have more color than my smaller guys. Thanks for the heads up on bony lipped barb- I'll...

    Osteochilus hasseltii - Hard-lipped Barb

I picked up 3 of these today, 3-4" each. The LFS had 2 larger ones, about 6"-7", and the coloration was really awesome on them! Red spots on the body and a deep red tail. These smaller ones have some red on the tail, but not on the body yet. There's not a lot of information on the net that I can...

    Woo! $7 Roseline Sharks!

I just scored 3 of them at $6.99 each from Petsmart!! I've been looking every week at a few different PetSmarts around town since this thread started, and imagine my surprise when I finally saw about 7 of them swimming around in a tank! They said they'll be carrying them this quarter. Now I have...

My 180 currently has the following: 2" Leopard Ctenopoma 3" Anostomus anostomus Three 2" Puntius denisonii (Roseline Sharks) One 1.5" Featherfin Synodontis cat I am going to add a 3" Semaprochilodus taeniurus. Would a 3" Red Spotted Gold Severum be a suitable addition? I really like the looks...

    Question about Cryptocorynes

So I've had my Crypt for a couple of weeks now, and it's thriving! Gave it a fertcicle, seems to be going well. New leaves, tons of roots growing up through the turface substrate, etc... Frankly, I'm shocked. My 180 gallon tank only has 2 36" strips with 1 bulb each. VERY low light. My question...

    Thoughts on stocking my 180

Acclimating a 1" Synodontis eupterus. He's so cute! What are the growth rates on these guys? I know they get about 8"ish.

Mildly controversial topic, prestressing fish for shipping

I liken this to spending a day or two purging fish prior to shipping in order to make sure they are not excreting more waste than necessary into the bags. I'm sure those little fishies get hungry and stressed when they don't eat for 48 hours, but the end result is less waste and better survival...

    Water Change Technique

Well, I think next weekend I'll just gravel vac half the tank, remove 25-40% of the water (depending on nitrate levels), dump in a little extra dose of dechlor, and fill up the tank directly. This business of dragging the barrel into the house, unhooking the wet/dry pump, blah, blah, blah was...

    Water Change Technique

Yeah- I have that. I'm just not sure about adding tap water directly to the tank vs. letting it circulate for a bit with the dechlorinator in a separate container.

    Water Change Technique

I did my first water change yesterday. What a JOB! I filled up at 55 gallon barrel with tap water, treated it, and let the airpump circulate it for about an hour. Then I pulled the pump out of my wet dry and used it to pump the water into the tank. My husband said, "If you're going to do all of...

    possible tank mates?

That is just a list of fish that can tolerate lower temperatures. But Buenos Aires can do just fine in a tropical tank as well. That particular list shows their upper range at 77, which is definitely a tropical tank range.

This is the first I've heard of Congos being coldwater. Where did you get this information?

    possible tank mates?

I have a Centopoma that I adore. So much personality! Try Brochis sp. for bottom feeders. They get pretty big. For schoolers, try some of the larger, high bodied, tetras. Buenos aires, Congos, etc... How big is your Ctenopoma now?

Need a bottom feeder for my 180 with slow feeders

So my "slow feeding" Ctenopoma and Anostomus have now gotten very comfortable and are slow feeders no more! They are now housed with 3 Denisonii barbs (2.5") that were added yesterday. Still looking for a bottom feeder. Any thoughts on Synodontis cats? There are SO MANY of them, that it's...

    Woo! $7 Roseline Sharks!

ThatFishPlace has small ones for $12.99. I've looked and thought hard about getting them. But I have heard that they can be a little touchy during shipping, and TFP doesn't guarantee live arrival. So I figure that by paying an extra $7 to the LFS I'm probably saving money (no shipping charges...
