    moisture under hood

I currently have glass lids on my tank with a 4' fluorescent light sitting on top. In order to do any real hands on maintenance, I have to remove the light and the glass panels, so I would like to build a hood that would allow me to open the tank for full access. One concern of mine is not...

    Spring cleaning anecdote.

I decided to take my gravel vacuuming session to another level today, and it got nasty. I have some rather large (2ft long) pieces of drift wood in my 90gal. They are screwed down to bases made of slate tile, which makes them pretty immobile. Last time I relocated this tank, I realized how...

    What canister filter is recommended??

You can never go wrong with a stop by bigalsonline.com when it comes time to shop around for the big stuff. Or the little stuff too I guess. Go ahead and get a big jug of water conditioner while you are at it, screw buying that stuff in small volumes. I bought a Cascade 1200, not highly...

    Water Changes and Fish Stress

Certainly some fish are more troubled by the activity, so I would agree with rbishop, keep your movements slow until your more skittish fishes become adjusted. As for me, all of my fish either play with or tolerate the gravel vac, except my silver dollars, who run from it like my dog runs...

How much water do you change every week?

As far as conserving the water, I pump the old water out the window into the back yard when I do a water change. I guess it is up to my dirt and weeds to recycle it from there.

How much water do you change every week?

About 50% every couple of weeks. Sometimes more often.:) sometimes a little less often.:headshake2: Not exactly clockwork, but I get it done.

125gal tank build. Lots of pics beware.

Sweeeeet. And about those rocks, I would be concerned too. You might not need to fill the tank with solid rocks to get that look. Maybe you could make a cave. It would give you some height, but maybe with less weight. Plus, caves rock.

    A question about bloodworms....

I switched to the frozen cubes and never went back to the freeze dried. Seems like the frozen stuff would have to be more nutritious, but I don't have any facts to back that up with.

    Filter Intake Covers?

I have never run a filter with a sponge on the intake, so I don't know how it will affect the filter, but I do know sand will get to your impeller if you don't do something to stop it. So, don't run it until you find a safe way to protect it.

DIY styrofoam aquarium background....this should end up bein pretty fly

very nice. Get some rams for that tank. Or get some Africans. I've never gone that route myself, but lots of people have rock walls in their African tanks.

    Aquarium Bugs...?!?

Some type of mite? Are these bugs actualy under water, or just some bugs eating fish funk off your net while it sits in the corner?

My 3665 Gallon Lined Plywood Tank Build Log

Your water bill varies quite a bit according to your location. Here in Memphis, we are sitting on loads of fresh water, so it is hardly a concern. Other towns are not so lucky, remember the rationing last Summer. I'm neglecting to back this up with any referenced facts, because this is a...

rainbow trout. what do i need?

I'm not sure you are going to find many home aquarium keepers with rainbow trout experience. I have seen trout setups in public aquariums and they have a ridiculously strong current, but that may just be for breeding. Also, I don't know that 125gal is large enough for a 3 foot long fish...

The black trim around top and bottom of tanks...

I'm no engineer, but I don't think they are strictly decorative. If it is coming loose, you should probably reattach it with silicone.

    Silicone Curing?

48 hours should be plenty. If you are using the pure. I would question the reliability of a silicone that didn't cure in 48 hours. Of course, I'm not going to contradict the directions on the tube...

Would you feel safe putting a 40g breeder on an upper floor?

Never seen a second floor tank question last this long. I suppose this isn't helping the post count though. Also, as someone mentioned, even if you aren't worried about the weight, you might want to do some ripple tests with a bucket of water to see how much of your feetsteps vibrations is...
