    Questions about Firemouths!!

Sorry to piggyback on this thread, but I figured the experienced Firemouth people are already here.... I am getting ready to re-setup my 90g tank (moved recently) and am thinking about basing it around Firemouths...how many could I keep in this tank (48" x 18" x 24"')? I am thinking 2 or 3...

    fish compatability

I know there are two different sub-species of a similar looking fish. One is from brackish water and gets HUGE and one is freshwater and is better suited for the aquarium. Maybe an expert can chime in and shed more light on this for you.

    New Cichlid tank

Yeah, I'm jealous, I wish I had neutral water. Anyway, to answer your question, the easiest thing to do would be to use crushed coral or coral sand as the substrate. This should raise your PH to the 7.8 - 8.4 range. You can also use limestone or any other hard, calcerous rock for...

    what else to feed?

They should go nuts for freeze-dried krill. Good for them too (on occassion, not daily). Cheap and easy to store as well.

    What a joke.

    Help!!!

Give them back to the store and take what you can get. It's not like you paid for the fish, right? Fish stores have a hard time selling big fish and they are expensive to feed.

    wood on cichlids tank ??safe???

It depends on how hard your tapwater is. Florida usually has pretty soft water. Are you using crushed coral/coral sand as the substrate? This will keep the PH at or near 8.0 (where you want to be). You don't want the driftwood to lower the PH.

    what you guys thing???(filters)

Like what I would do is like trade in all three filters for like an Emporer 400 and like be done with it.

    stocking my new tank

Skip the Salvini unless you want a war in your tank. They do not get that large, but man are they agressive! Wait until you have the new tank setup and running a few weeks before you buy anymore fish. I would not add anymore cichlids. The ones you have now will all grow before you know it...

    Convict Pics

Thanks. This one makes you appreciate how large a male Con can get. He is around 5 inches long, not including the tail. He has grown out and up instead of long lately. I picked him up out of the tank once and I couldn't believe the weight. I'm not sure how old he is, I've had him for about...

Mixing 2 highly agressive fish together?

LOL! The whole concept is ill conceived. Hopefully, the topic starter will get the point.

    What can convicts go with?

I would not recommend mixing Central American cichlids with African cichlids. The behavior and body language is too different. Also, tank setups should reflect the region where the fish come from geographically. One could argue different water parameters too, but most fish can adapt. In...

Where to place the water in-take and output from filter?

You were right the first time. Put the intake at one end of the tank, and the output at the other end of the tank. Turn the output so that it pushes the water towards the intake side. This way you have a steady current from one side to the other. It should also push suspended particulates to...

    Filter Media

I wouldn't run carbon in canisters. The carbon stops aborbing contaminants after about 2 weeks. You shouldn't need to run carbon all the time, anyway, only to remove smells or medications. However, if you want to open your canisters every two weeks, by all means use it. I would fill the...

Life after Gulp.....new arrangement, new fish.

Nice pics. I would keep adding more slate. The tank looks empty.

    Most reliable heaters

I seriously doubt a 100w heater could cook a 30g tank. Now, at 10w per gallon (or double the recommended heating power), a heater malfunction can be lethal. I have that same heater in a 90 gallon tank!

    S. leucosticta feeding problems

I wouldn't be worried unless this lasts for over a week. Earth Eaters like to eat by sifting through the substrate, so use sinking food. Floating food will probably be ignored. Like any cichlid, when they're hungry, they'll eat!

    Most reliable heaters

OK, and why would you put a 300w heater in a 29 gallon tank!?
