That's what I'm doing..fishless while away on vacation.
I did have a question about possible hanging a nylon stocking with some gravel to add some beneficials..would that allow snail eggs to get in the new tank.
I mean how small ARE the eggs generally speaking?
What do you do to get rid of them...I've accepted them for 2 years now and at night I swear HUNDREDS of them come out! I hate to think of killing them...But it's a fricken snail farm!:eek3:
I really don't want to start my new tank with snails and if they are not in free-flowing water, but...
Well now that I know snails lay eggs on the gravel and plants, I won't transfer either over...hope they are none stuck in the filter that can somehow get loose.
Ok sounds good...2 questions and then time for bed:
should I at least fill the new tank with conditoned water and just run it empty with the new gravel and the new filter alone in my absence?
Also since i did already siphon off 2-3 gal of water into the new tank...what is the likelyhood...
I'm thinking maybe I should fill it with conditioned water and transferred plants, rocks ect and leave the old gravel and fish in the 10 til I get back. (running the new tank with the new filter and heater and leaving the filter with the fish for now in the 10?)
That's my first instinct as well to just wait. But could I/ Should I fill the tank with more water from the 10 Gal as well as some gravel/plants from the 10 gal to seed it somehow and run it for two weeks with a little fish flake rotting while I'm away?
I also still wonder about the...
Ok guys this may sound complicated, but I want to do the right thing so here goes:
I've had a 10 gal FW tank cycled and nicely functioning for 2 years now... (one growing angel fish... I know I know..., 3 gummy nose tetras and a koolieloach) I Just got a 20 long and leaving for hawaii on...
I dunno...The cycle was started and this thread originally back on 2/28/06
the fish were all fine all spring...summer and most of the fall. Could a bacterial infection sustain for so long before infecting the fish now? Are the tons of snails stressing the fish and if so...why only certain...
update
Angel is getting huge...gummy tetras are fine and so is the lone kuli loach...
Bad news cory died from the fizzy tab treatment just a few days after treatment was switched to salt...male guppy died 2 months ago... female is sideways about to die now and the female platy did the same...
GREAT NEWS! MY NITRITES ARE AT ZERO THIS MORNING!! :D :thm:
i did one more 50% water change as I was told that the nitrates will have gott a bit higher as a result of the nitrites finally zeroing out...
I will keep a finger crossed, but I think my tank is finally cycled! :cool2:
UPDATE:
Ok so I took some water into my local non LFS store where I feel they have been the most straight forward and honest with me and they tested mywater
I am at .25 in nitrites! I have some nitrates built up...second color form the bottom and a good level she said...
ok it's now over two days later since my last post and I have still been doing 40-50% water changes 1-2 a day. It seems my nitirites are just stuck at 0.5.
Should I just keep doing 1-2 40-50% changes a day to keep it at .5 or is it reasonable to expect my water changes to bring it...
