Using water from the ocean Good or Bad

I can't say it 100% but I can say it with confidence. At the end of the day its just my opinion and just my advice. Going on my experience, others experience and my knowledge of marine microbiology, marine biology and aquaculture, unpolluted seawater is fine to put into your tank. I'm not...

Using water from the ocean Good or Bad

Treating seawater with bleach (chlorine) would kill any living things that are present in the water (like bacteria etc), there is no need to do this as none of the organisms present pose any risks to the animals in your tank. Unless you collect water during a red tide or something :) the chances...

    Bristle Worm

No it can't harm your fish, if a fish runs in to it then it might get a few spikes on it but that won't do the fish any harm. Just think of bristleworms as earthworms with spikes :) they are just detritus feeders.

    quick ich question

Cleaner shrimps and cleaner wrasses remove external parasites, whitespot is located just beneath the skin so its not really an external parasite. The cleaner shrimp will try to clean the fish but they won't be successful. So they can neither cure nor prevent whitespot. When people have found...

    quick ich question

If you start to see more then it is most likely whitespot, if you still only see 2 spots the next day then it could just be something stuck on its slime coat or just a mark of some kind.

    Begginer salt ?

I've had to move my 20g reef quite a few times, big pain. Personally I would just set-up a FOWLR tank. That way you can just put the rock in a container without water, just put a really wet towel over it and it'll stay alive. The fish can go in a bucket with a battery aerator and if you don't...

    Sand from the beach

Yeah sand from the beach is fine to use. Unless the beach is near a city or lots of boats then it should be clean. Just rinse it well to get all the fine stuff out as it would cloud the water.

    Snowflake eel questions

Just a comment, solitary animals can't get lonely. We as people tend to put human emotions on fish but they just don't fit. Some shy fish will hide more if there aren't other fish in the tank, that's just a security / natural survival thing though. Also the thing I would be most concerned...

    redclaw

This thread should probably be moved to the freshwater section. What do you want to know? They are freshwater crayfish, they'll eat just about anything but they are mostly vegetarians/scavengers, best kept in ponds or large tanks, the males have the red patch on the claws and the females...

    Moon coral food

First off don't panic, it looks healthy and most photosynthetic corals get most (up to 99%) of their nutrition just from light. Many corals respond more to food in the water column than 'being fed'. That is if they detect a lot of small food particles floating around they will extend their...

Lights On or Off? Pre-Cured Rock

Turn the lights on so the coralline algae will survive and grow. The tank will also need to go through an 'algae cycle' so its best to get that started from the beginning. The lights should be on anywhere from 8 to 12hrs a day depending on the tank. Since you don't have any corals 8hrs is plenty.

when I do my upgrade, empty tank! Ideas!!

I have a little Sebastapistes cyanostigma (Yellow-Spotted Scorpionfish); they're tiny, colourful, cute and personable. They can be a little tricky to get eating but once they start they'll eat anything. Mine was real scrawny when I got him but he's growing now. Can be kept with other fish (very...

cleaning crew for a 90 gal corner

Turbo and trochus snails are good for eating algae on surfaces (rocks and glass). Trochus do get big and can tend to knock things over but they do a really good job, they do suit bigger tanks like yours. Most hermit crabs are reefsafe. Again some are big and knock things over but small ones...

    Anyone tried these?

I've bought two different brands of cheap metal halides before, not those ones but the same sort of thing. My experience is they start out great, nice colour and bright but they lose their colour pretty quickly. Mine went from a 14000k to around 6500k in about 2 months. Stayed bright and the...

I.D. this for me please :P

If the polyps are out and extended most days and it keeps its colour then its happy. The flow should be just enough to keep the polyps moving a bit, they can handle low to moderate flow but they don't particularly like being blasted. The polyps will close up if the flow is too much anyway.

    Goby/Blennie feeding

Best thing to do is feed less often and see if that has an effect. If it has no effect then you can go back to what you were doing. Frozen foods do tend to introduce more phosphate etc than dry food so you could try feeding dry food on some days instead (if they'll take it).

best water test kit to start with for FOWLR?

The API test kits can be used on freshwater and saltwater, well most of them I think. API is good enough for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate so I would get the API master test kit. You'll also need a KH test kit, you could get an API one but I would get a Salifert one if you can they are more...

    Reef Lighting

Another vote for T5HO's. Individual reflectors and ATI bulbs will get the most out of a T5 light set-up. Less heat than halides, bulbs aren't very expensive and great light output for the wattage.

    Few questions

Yep just diatams, a type of tiny brown algae. Totally normal part of the cycle. Yours doesn't look too bad so I don't think you have any nutrient problems just the tank going through its algae cycle. If it sticks around for weeks then you might have some kind of nutrient or flow issue but at...
