Cuticom's Aqua One 500 Reef with a Puffer

Well hamlet decided to have a taste of my favourite coral so I spent a few hours this morning setting a new tank up for him and he's moved to a 32g FO "how not to decorate a marine tank" tank. As to the corals the black sun will hopefully recover, he didn't get to to many polyps before I caught...

Cuticom's Aqua One 500 Reef with a Puffer

I took some pics of the corals extended before I moved them... Duncan Goni Blasto FTS with the corals moved, oh and there's actually quite a bit of space between the goni and Duncan. ones against the back of the tank and the other at the front, it's just not obvious in the pic

Cuticom's Aqua One 500 Reef with a Puffer

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate 0, pH 8.4, Calcium 450ppm, alkalinity is really low though at 80ppm I'm raising it now though slowly so I don't shock anything, PO4 is negligible. None of the other corals show any problems though they're all fully extended and feeding. It retracted in the bag while...

Cuticom's Aqua One 500 Reef with a Puffer

It was fully extended in the store, I was really surprised to see it retract so much, hopefully with a few feedings it'll be a bit better.

Cuticom's Aqua One 500 Reef with a Puffer

I am monitoring how he goes, and if he showed any sign of discomfort he would either be found a new home or moved to another tank. I do have reasons for choosing the nano over the larger tank. I closely monitor the tank params, and it's is fairly obvious when Hamlet is bored with his...

    2 coral related questions

I've found for the big polyps probably 4-5 mysis make up a very good feeding, though they'll pretty much eat as much as you offer. For small baby heads they can consist mainly on detritus in the tank and once their larger you can begin feeding mysis etc. I keep four sun corals and they are...

Cuticom's Aqua One 500 Reef with a Puffer

So this tank is still relatively new and began life as a Fish only tank, but that didn't last LOL. It was started on the 11/4/08 (dd/m/yy) so it'd be nearly three months old. So Equipment 150w HQI Clip on Metal Halide 950l/ph filter, only used for things like phospad and when waters murky...

    Thinking about doing Saltwater...

Somes good, theres a lot missing though. Firstly if you still plan to keep an anemone you need more lighting, if you don't wnat an anemone and a look alike will do that lighting will be fine for a frogspawn or torch coral and many other corals besides. Since you wnat inverts and corals you...

    Marine Snow: opinions??

Sorry for butting in, but is marine snow good to feed in general? I was looking at it as something to feed the tank, so all the smaller critters, feather dusters etc got something.

1.5 gallon hex tank.. any suggestions? never done SW

With a 1.5g you made need less liverock but you would need an Auto Top Off unit, a sump of some sort so you have room for a heater, and liverock rubble. That'll cost more then some extra liverock and a larger powerhead for the ten. Then you of course can't keep fish in it, maybe a few of the...

1.5 gallon hex tank.. any suggestions? never done SW

I would not suggest using a 1.5g tank for saltwater. Even a tiny amount of evaporation would make s.g. swing wildly, which would be dangerous to all organisms. There is no marine fish that can ethically be kept in any tank under 5g, and even 5g is really pushing it. Pico tanks (less then 5g)...

    way too nano tank

I wouldn't put any fish in it, wouldn't raise clownfish fry in it either, even a small amount of evaporation would make salinity swing wildly, and there'd be a lot of waste build up with such a small volume of water.

28 gallon bow front will this lighting work?

Whether or not it fits would be up to you as I ahve no idea on the measurements... LPS should definitely work, and probably some softies, mushrooms, zoanthids etc would all work as well.

    Shopping List/Suggestions

How do you plan to run the refugium below the tank without an overflow and not drilled? The rest sounds good. You need ultimately about 25-20 x turn over in the tank as it sounds like your planning a reef tank, so the pump return from the refugium and then just add as many powerheads as...

28 gallon bow front will this lighting work?

That could work, though MH lighting would give you more scope in what corals you could keep..

    Thinking about doing Saltwater...

You'd need to check on the lights, as they will restrict what corals you can have, that is if you want corals... Otherwise that sounds like a pretty good deal. That all sounds good, do you have a firmer idea of what sort of things you want? If you do want a nemo style set up you can def get a...

    Thinking about doing Saltwater...

Dory is a Royal Tang, you need a six foot tank to get one of those... It doesn't look like thats the sort of size you want though... A 40g would probably allow you a max of six small clownfish sized fish... Stocking needs to be a lot lighter for saltwater then it is in freshwater. So do you...

    Thinking about doing Saltwater...

If your not completely sure what you want, make sure you put plenty of money aside for lights and a skimmer as above, so if you start with FO and decide to switch to reef you don't have to throw out half your equipment. Read everything you can get your hands on about marine tanks, look at...

Do you stare at your tank??

I have chairs in front of all my tanks... Their fantastic for preventing me doing schoolwork LOL.
