    Seahorse & Goby combo

My yellow watchman rarely ventures away from his cave. Most of the time he just sits halfway out of it scanning the current for food. And he's currently the only fish I have, so he's not staying put to avoid others. I can't imagine he could do much to scare a SH.

    Plumbing size conversions

Hi all! I need some tips regarding my return pump. I just got my Eheim 1250 today, but the output is a lot smaller than my plumbing. My plumbing is 3/4" PVC and the output is 3/8". I had a larger pump (the 1260) that I had connect to my plumbing with flexible tubing that fit securely over...

    Over night... HUNDREDS of Snails

I like having a lot of snails in my tanks. Both freshwater tanks have MTS, pond and common ramshorns. I do my best to simulate a natural ecosystem, where there are many more snails than "higher" organisms. If you have more snails than you want and they're becoming pests, cut down on feeding...

    OTOs

If I were you, I would start with 3-5 and add a couple otos occasionally until you get to a number you feel is healthy for your tank. Keep an eye on the algae, making sure there's always some for them to eat - but always supplement with some kind of protein source (mine love shrimp pellets).

    otto eating

I like to feed shrimp pellets for a little protein...they love to munch on them. In my experience, otos naturally seek out vertical surfaces and don't spend much time on the substrate. I have a plant lamp glaring into one side of my tank that helps to grow plenty of algae. They can usually be...

    My 29g progress thread

Well, I got rock from a member of my local reef club filled with all sorts of cool hitchhikers! I was so happy to find someone local I could get rock from. Not only is it well-established, it was much cheaper than the store. There's just over 30lbs. So far, in addition to what's in these pics...

How do I kill them all?!

What kind of snails are they? The common pest snails (MTS, pond, common ramshorns) won't bother your plants. More likely, your plants are dying for other reasons and the snails are feasting on the dead tissue, thereby increasing their numbers. Cut down on extra food sources (overfeeding...

    My 29g progress thread

Okay everybody, I've finally got some pics for you! Prep for painting back of tank. I've discovered that, when you're doing DIY projects in an apartment, plastic sheeting is your best friend! Tank, pre-paint. Tank, post-paint. Sleek! Wet tank with salt mixing. And here are three...

    My 29g progress thread

The gph through my sump will only be about 250 anyway, so I'm pretty much set on that end of things. I'll be using 3/4" PVC for my drain and return. From the looks of things, this internal PVC overflow can be whatever size I choose to make it. It looks really customizable, which I love. I...

    My 29g progress thread

Thanks to a great guy I met in my local club, I have two nice little holes in my tank now! My original plan was to build an internal overflow box, but last night I discovered this thread on Reef Central: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1257783&perpage=25&pagenumber=2...

    Brine Shrimp question

The internet can be so amazing....as long as you know what to search for! I found more info on this topic and thought others might be interested. The two main reasons I found that nobody likes to hatch brine shrimp eggs directly in their tank are: 1. the egg capsules are very tough, and if...

    Brine Shrimp question

Okay, this question may have a very obvious answer, but I haven't been able to figure it out myself, so I'll turn to the forum. :) Why doesn't anyone simply hatch brine shrimp directly in their tanks/fuges? I see plenty of people who have special dedicated containers, but haven't been able to...

    Powerheads for 29g

After lots of digging I found a thread on another forum where someone said that an Eheim 1250 will give 200gph at about 3 feet, so I think I'm going with that one.

    29g AGA tempered or not?

I'm trying to be absolutely sure whether or not the wall of my 29g All-Glass Aquarium is tempered or not. I found this page: http://www.aqueonproducts.com/products/empty-and-full-weight-information.htm which confirms that the bottom is not tempered. But it says nothing about the sides. I'm...

ID these German blue rams if they are male or female.

If I were you I'd just keep a close eye on them and provide plenty of hiding places. I think you'll be very happy if you manage to get a female. These fish have tons of personality, and my pair definitely show their best colors and personalities when they're together. My male just loves to show...

will two female German Blue Rams fight?

According to most of the comments I've seen, and as Cathy G suggested, this would be a bad idea. Two bonded pairs would be ok, but not a pair and an extra female. I'm sure someone out there has done it and been successful - all fish are different - but it would be an irresponsible thing to...

ID these German blue rams if they are male or female.

As for sexing tips: The pink belly is a reliable positive indicator of a female. If you see the pink belly, it's definitely female. However, if you don't see a pink belly, don't automatically assume the fish is a male. My female only gets a pink belly when she's gearing up to spawn. Another...

    Frozen tank?

Thanks so much for all the advice! I'm getting the tank drilled, so once the bulkheads are in place I'll definitely test it.

    Powerheads for 29g

It'll be a reef. I'll look for something that can get me about 250gph with head pressure. I want to make sure the water isn't blasting through my sump/fuge. I'll plan to use 2 Koralia 1's in addition to that. Can anyone recommend a good pump that'll give me about 250gph at 3 feet of head?

    live rock?

See if there's a local reef club near you. Members often will have live rock for sale (among other equipment, etc.). Plus, members are usually very nice and eager to help a fellow hobbyist.
