I haven't added any fish in a long time and I'm looking for ideas to spice up my tank a little bit if possible. I have a 55 gallon tank with 1 Festivum, 1 Green Severum, 1 Blue Acara, a bristlenose pleco and a couple small cories. The tank is pretty peaceful and I'd like to keep it that way...

How do you like this thing? I thought it looked good for some maintenance in between water changes, but I've heard very mixed reviews on the performance.

I'm very happy with my Filstar XP2 on my 55 gallon. I think you'll find it very easy to maintain.

Speaking of Walmart, I found Melafix there...............and was half tempted to dump it into their tanks.

Try jumping on Ebay for an emperor or penguin. I like my Filstar II on a 55 gallon setup.

What kind of water conditioner do you use? I was always losing fish after water changes and I was using the tetra brand water conditioner. I switched to Prime and I never lose any now. Maybe just a coincidence, I don't know, but it's something to try.

They get soft pretty quickly in water. I find my other fish attack them also, so try feeding them after dark. I think the cories get a better shot at them then.

I bought a brand new 55 gallon with tank/nice wood stand/lights for $225.00 back in October. I then probably spent another $180.00 on filters and accessories............not including fish. So, depending on the condition, type of stand, etc. it sounds like a good deal to me!

I don't really think it matters. I've played with different orientations. As long as you have the cover plate on the top container you should be good to go. I imagine you could remove the dividers and stuff the baskets full of media if you wanted.

I second the Prime. I used to use Aquasafe when changing water but it seemed like the aquarium always became unstable after water changes. I have had much better success with the Prime. I believe that Easybalance is sold as some kind of supplement that eliminates Nitrates and makes it so...

I have a Filstar. There's a couple plastic tabs on the inside where the valve mechanism is. They are along the arc of where the valve turns. If you can manage to push both in at the same time you can open the valve. I've found that this does clean the tubes a bit, but I'm nervous about doing...

I believe that the biowheels themselves are more than sufficient, stuff the bays with mechanical media and call it good!
